dsquared Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 Hello everybody, this is my first posting and I am excited about being part of this forum. Below is a picture of my truck 48 1/2 ton and also a picture of the extra springs,I dont think they are stock, should i remove them? I dont plan to work the truck that hard so are they necessary? I will also be parting out a 50 1/2 ton in the near future with a low bed. thanks for your help. Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 My 52 has these overloads too. Remember, these truck were "Job Rated" and could be ordered with the overloads. They are stock. They don't effect the ride of the truck when unloaded. Quote
Guest Dave Claussen Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 If you take them out you'll have probably have to find different "U" bolts to hold the shock mount to the axle housing. I don't think there's enough thread there to move the nuts up to hold the leaf springs, shock mount, and axle housing together. Also the nuts on mine were so rusted that even soaking them with penatrating oil and then heat I still couldn't get the nuts off without ruining them. Unless you are prepared to go through all that, just leave them on. They don't really affect your ride, as Reg pointed out. The reason I took mine out was because I was changing the rear end to a F**D 9", so I ended up cutting the "U" bolts with an abrasive wheel in my angle grinder. If not for that I wouldn't have touched them. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 If you do try to get them out here's some tips. Run a thread chaser up the thread as far as you can. Then use lots of heat and air if you got it. Gotten many apart this way. Quote
jamesadams Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Where are you? I really would like to get my hands on that bed! Quote
dsquared Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks for your help, The problem started when I realized I would have to cut a big notch in the second from the front bed support to get the spring brackets to bolt up to the frame, now that I know they are stock I'll keep them. I live in the Hudson Valley, about a hour and half north of New York city. Quote
