I've got to go through my 3:89 rear end on my truck-getting a bit worn. The good news is that I have a spare diff that I can rebuild and swap in. I think I read where someone said that the spiders and shafts that they got from VPW were the same as a 1 ton rear. Is that true, and can anyone speak from experience? I'm figuring that I'll have to match up the bearings, the pinion seal is new, but I know the spiders are worn. Can anyone help with a parts source? Thanks-Mike

That was me. I just did the 4:10 in my '54 1 ton and bought the spider gear and shaft kit from VPW. Though the part numbers in my MoPar parts book differ from PW to truck, they were exactly the same. It was NOS military stuff, packed in several different layers of packaging with lots of cosmoline. The carrier bearings on mine turned out to be the same as some trailer wheel bearings, so they were readily available from multiple sources. Pinion bearings were good so I did not search them out.

Also, my pinion seal was an exact match from VPW, just measured the OD of the seal where it meets the housing (3.5" maybe?).

VPW said that if the parts did not fit I could return them minus a stocking charge of like 20%. I felt that was more than fair and did not have to return anything.

The pinion seal is the same seal as used on the Chrysler Crown Imperials at least 1946-1952. I see them on Ebay all the time. Thats what I used.

These rear ends share some of the same internal parts-not the ring and pinions though. I have a 3.58 Crown Imperial (145" WB) rear pumkin I might put in my 1 ton axle housing-might be a bit stiff though. Not sure if the truck could pull it up the steeper hills.

When I rebuilt the rear end on the '49 in '04, I sourced a lot of parts from AB Linn on eBay...he was selling surplus M37 parts, and emaling him back & forth on part numbers, I was able to cross most of his stuff to my parts manual. I assume VPW would have the same stuff, cosmoline & all.
