I've come to the conclusion that it is impossible to get conventional metric replacement rims for my 49 1 ton which has 750 x16" 6 bolt split rims. So,I was wondering if anyone has put the 235 85/16 radials on a split rim with tubes or should I stick with trying to hunt down the bias ply.I see that there is lots of discussion with regards to the bias vs radial and how great the ride is and of course I would like to go down that road ...lol, but it seems to be just with the metric rim.My issue is with the split using a radial.

BTW, when I get some more cash scraped together I'm trying a drop rim hoop welded to the old centers...

It is NOT reccomended to mount radials to our split ring rims. The radial design puts to much side pressure on the ring and they can fail without warning. If you go the drop center with old bolt disc route make sure the drop center will clear the brake drums. The safest route is bias ply tires with tubes and flaps.

Yah from what I've been able to figure the drop ring smallest diameter is the same as the center, but that's what makes me go to a 17" tire.

I bought new rims the only difference was the backspace. The factory split rim is 6" and the new rims are 4". With the 235/85 rubber the front clearance to the fender is a little tight but it looks good.

Earlier this summer I hauled 600lbs to the dump without any rubbing.

Everything else is stock but I really do like the difference radials made over the bias tires.

When big trucks first switched to radials back in the 70's, it was done using the existing locking ring type rim with a radial tube and tire (10R- 20 sized tire). I've got a Mack thats got 4 on the back that used to haul heavy. I've also spoken to 3-4 people that have made the switch to radials on the 6 hole 1 ton rims, and they're very happy with the swap. It improved handling and ride quality. I've talked to one truck tire dealer that advised against using radials on lock rims, and another one that said he had no problem as long as the rims were true, and the groove and locking ring in good condition and tight fitting. I think the big difference in our situation is that our trucks for the most part are hobby or toy trucks, not going to be used to haul heavy loads. While bias ply tires are available for our 16" budds, I'm still comptemplating making the switch to radials on the steers when I need tires. It was common back during the initial swap from bias to radials to use one type on the front, and the other on the rear as long as they weren't mixed on the same axle. Just my 2 cents. Mike
