The Pilot-house truck in Hot Rod had three coats of matte clear coat paint on it. Question to those who paint: For such a patina as that truck has, how important and how extensive was the prep work? For example, I wonder what he did on the hood and on the upper fenders where 'no color' seems to have remained?

There is another patina look, faux (fake) patina. In that look, the truck is painted and then the paint is rubbed down to the primer to give the appearance of age. I would guess that prep work would be substantial.

I'd guess he went over the truck with a DA to remove any sharp paint edges and the loose rust, then sprayed on the matte finish clear coat Still doesn't look right because I've never seen shiny rust.

Faux Patina is NOT just like nature did it! PERIOD! I like a good original patina.

The red truck looks original and the paint quite solid. The passenger door looks like it may have been repainted but the very front grill housing matches the bed. I am going primer the shiny metal spots, resand my truck one more time to get a very, very smooth finish, then clear coat it. Most of you know my truck so no attachment. Will get this article and keep it.

I put this tail gate out in the weather 3 or 4 months ago. I rubbed it down with automatic tranny fluid. There are a few rusty spots developing, but overall, it has held up well through the fog, rain, sunshine, etc. I'm amazed that the bare metal shows no deteriotion.
