47heaven Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I have my rocker moulding at the shop being repaired. The guy fixing it and polishing it pointed out to me that he noticed that something used to be in the front end of it, possibly to hold it into something. All that's there now is a small rusted chunk of what used to be there. Does anyone know what that was and possibly have a pic of what it should look like? He want to fabricate something on there so that I can mount it, but has no idea what it should look like. In the pic below, you can see how bad the moulding mounts are and that something is missing where the front used to connect or mount to. Who can solve this mystery? Quote
Young Ed Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 There is a welded in piece with a stud on it. Quote
47heaven Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 There is a welded in piece with a stud on it. That's what I kind of figured it may have been. What are the two holes for on the fender where this goes? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I think the stud goes into the slot looking hole, not the big round one. You will be able to tell when putting the trim up to the car. It pops over the big clips shown. They just need to be straight up and down. You may need to gently straighten them out with your hammer. Don't look too bad condition from the picture. Quote

I'll look and see today what I can rig in there, since no one has a pic or rendering of the stud assembly for that. BTW...how do the mouldings snap on to the clips? Do you get them into the top groove, first, them push them to snap into the bottom one? One of the moulding clips is pretty much rusted. I don't know what could be rigged to imatate one of these. BobT-47P15 Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I actually have two or three that were made by someone for rocker moulding. I can't recall now if my father made them, or someone else. Basically a flat piece of metal about inch and a quarter or inch and a half wide, with a little angle bent into each end to go in the channels . Then a bolt of correct size run thru the middle to attach to the body. Have to do a little calculating to determine correct placement of the bolt. Look nothing like the factory clips, but do the same job. Then you fit one side of the trim piece over either bottom or top of the clip, pushing down and in -- or up and in -- for it to pop on over the clip. Remove in a similar fashion. Will see if I can find one of the home made clips for a picture. Quote
bob westphal Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 The front fastener of the moulding was a1/4" bolt welded to the moulding. It goes in the slotted hole on the fender. The other clips have a clip on their backside and in the center that clipped into the slots on the rocker.. The clips I bought from 'I don't remember who' that were supposed to be the correct clip, weren't. I just ground the little mounting clip that holds it to the rocker off and moved the modified clip a short ways away from the original slot on the rocker and drilled a hole. I fastened the clips on with a sheet metal screw. The moulding clips on by setting it on the top of the rocker clips and pressing down and in at the bottom. You might have to slap it with your hand to get it to go on. Quote

I'm going down now toget the pieces to make the trim clips, according to your scetch. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 Well....I found one of those home made rocker moulding clips. Not as I had remembered them. It is made of two pieces of metal, riveted together. The small piece was designed to go under the edge of the car and use a screw to hold it in place. Far as I know, it fits in the channels OK. Don't have an extra one to check it with. Another view. Quote
