1942cowdodge Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Now this is kind of an interesting subject. If you buy a vehicle up here in Washington and the person you buy it from does not have a pink slip for it than you better prepare for along wait befor you can get whatever vehicle in your name. You can get ownership but you haft to wait three years to get that! I know a friend of mine who has a small trailer is having a heck of a time getting that thing in his name. But it can be done only it takes three years as I stated. What is it in your state? Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 I registered a few vehicles in New York without previous paperwork. For one of them I signed an affidavit in front of the Motor Vehicle clerk and that was it. I had both my insurance card and tracing of the VIN with me, which helped. My friend got a car and lost the title to it before he registered it. In that case, he had to send a registered letter to the last known address of the previous owner, and save it unopened when it got returned to show the DMV that he tried to make contact and couldn't. He got his title as well. From what I've seen and heard, NY is one of the better states to deal with for lost paperwork. Some other states are a real nightmare. Quote
Captain Neon Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Once the previous owner is located and notified that you are in possession of their vehicle, it takes thirty days in Missouri. Quote
41/53dodges Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 call the DMV, wait on the phone for an hour, wait for a weeks and a half for forms in the mail/ wait 3 hours at the DMV for those forms, fill out 1/2 dozen different forms, pay about $250 in taxes and fees, put down 1.5 times vehicle value (really about 5 times) and wait a year, if nobody reports you, its yours. thats what its supposed to be. old rat 49 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 North Carolina. If no NC title on hand you must have auto inspected by State Identity and Theft Bureau Inspector. This took me a total of four months to finally get a new Title in hand. My car is a 49 first series P15 which does not show up in their data base so they arbitrarily gave it a 46 title. And they used the engine/frame number not the body number on door frame tag. Quote
