This was in Winnipeg Canada in a neighbourhood called Fort Garry. It is late winter of this year, at his favorite skateboard park right in the hood. JoelOkie Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Hey Fred, nice clip. The boy is coming along with that board! I remember this boy on ice skates at the hockey rink a while back....he's the good looking kid that favors his mother. Just kiddin' you there Fred. I can see why you'd be proud. My son was about that age (about 22 years ago) and got a real nice board for Christmas one year....little later that day Dad was going to show him a few tricks on it... ahem.... and later that same day Dad was taken to the emergency room with a severally sprained ankle. michael.warshaw Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 i skateboarded in the 80's, i was good but not as good as him. Quote
randroid Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Fred, When skateboarding first became popular in Southern California in the early 60's we called it 'sidewalk surfing' and to say that our equipment was crude was an understatement but I still loved doing it. Watching the evolution of those 'toys' has been intriguing and the stunts\tricks being done now could not have been imagined back then. You have every right to be proud of your son because the amount of work and practice he's had to put in to be able to do that is amazing. I noticed he wasn't wearing the armor that's standard issue here in the lower 48 but I bet he doesn't ride 'the little bus' to school, either. Thanks for posting. -Randy Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Looks like he does good with that board, Fred. Our youngest grandson can do a few things, but probably not that much. Good video. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) Christian looks really good on that board. My 9 year-old son, Henry, is also a really keen skateboarder. Here's a recent picture. He's been skating about 18 months. It amazes me what he, and the other kids, can do. I can understand your pride. Here's something different... I ride with him, quite regularly. Here's very short video of me riding a 12ft ramp. And a picture of 'our gang' with our 'team bus', last week. That's me on the left, with Henry in green. Robin. james curl Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Explain to an old man how he keeps the board under his feet when he jumps up like that to ride the rail. I have seen them grab the front of the board to keep it under them when they jump up but I see he just jumps up and the board comes with him. But I see where he jumps up from the board which he spins then lands on, I do not see how it all works. I am glad that I lived my youth long before skate boards were invented. If you knew how many times I fell while trying to roller skate it is a wonder that I do not have brain damage from all of the falls. I would have hurt myself big time if I had tried that as a kid, I could not chew gum and walk at the same time and not much has changed since then. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 James, Jumping with the board 'attached' to your feet is called 'an ollie'. Here's how to do it... It's taken me a long time, but I've just about mastered it well enough to ollie up a kerb. Quote
JoelOkie Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Explain to an old man .......... I am glad that I lived my youth long before skate boards were invented........ I guess that would have been 1955, when Marty McFly knocked the bottom wheel board off a borrowed soap box scooter. Joel Quote
PatS.... Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 I remember taking my sisters roller skates all apart and bolting the "trucks" on an old goalie stick part to make a "skate board" I got to be pretty good but nowhere near what the kids do today. Fred, he should at least wear a helmet...even the pro's do. That concrete gets pretty unforgiving. I wish I was as smart now as I was when I was 13...I'd be rich!! Quote

P-12 Tommy Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Wow Fred, He's pretty good on that ole' board. Tom Quote
Flatie46 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Wow he's good, I dig the video. Glad to see people appreciate southern rock all the way up there. I used to own a skate board like other kids in our neighborhood. I couldn't do tricks like your boy can. I remeber there was this hill we all used to go ride down called "I doubt it hill". It was called that because I doubt you could go down it without getting hurt. Still have scars from that LOL, tell him to wear the headgear if he's gonna be that "trick" on a board. Glad you posted brought back memorys. Quote
