grey beard Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 I have access to a 1948 Chrysler Windsor Parts car. This has the 25-inch long six cylinder block. Is it possible to replace the transmission in my 1948 B1B pickup with this Windsor unit? The Windsor may have fluid drive. Are the two three speed gearboxes the same? I realize the Windsor box is not a floor shift, but the tops should swap if the rest is the same. Any of you have experence with these parts interchangeability? Thanks for your time. Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Dave what are you asking, would you like to swap in the fluid drive coupler, clutch housing, and 3 spd trans. The 48 Windsor most likely has a 4 spd hydraulic trans, or semi-auto clunkomatic. Most 46-48 Windsors had this M5 trans. Now the rear motor mounts on the Windsor are on the clutch housing, is the truck the same, you would have to move it, or add the one in from the Windsor. The crank on your truck, is is an 8 bolt, that will be needed to bolt to the fluid drive coupler set-up. I suppose this could be done, but why would you want to? Are you hoping to get the benefit of the fluid drive, for around town driving, and the semi-auto feature about it. These trans IMHO, are very slow off the line, but that is okay with some folks. In order to use the M5 trans, you need the right carb, and wwiring to accomodate it's electrical components..........Fred Quote
mackster Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 grey beard might want to make it automatic. if that it i would think the better way to do it is going with a wildcap adaptor and a mopar tranny... Quote

If that be the case, I would agree. I think with the diff gearing on a truck, and do trans would be beneficial, unless Dave has swapped in higher gears already. You know for the trucks, I just get the feeling, a T 5 trans would be great..... Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Truck and car bell housings are quite different. To convert to a Fluid Drive in Dave's truck would be quite an undertaking. It would need a different bell housing and crankshaft for starters. To use the Chrysler bell housing would take some serious fabrication for rear mounts as well as clutch linkage and a total revamp of the brake master cylinder setup. Dave, is there something wrong with your trans? The trans in the Chrysler, if it has Fluid Drive, will have a much longer input shaft which wouldn't work with your standard clutch setup. And if it has the semi-auto trans it would be altogether different. Merle Quote
grey beard Posted May 13, 2010 Author Report Posted May 13, 2010 Yes, Merle - My tranny is pretty worn out - synchros are shot, it's noisy, it leaks and it has a lot of slop, pull/coast-wise inside, which tells me the bearings are departing. Long story short, I need a complete gearbox or a core to rebuild. I've considered a T-5, but that route pretty much requires a different rear axle unit to keep an emergency brake. If I cannot locate another three-speed box, I'll just have to move on to another option. I was hoping this Windsor box would be the same, but this is obviously not the case - no pun intended. Anyone have a three-speed gearbox for sale? Thanks Quote
