Jim Yergin Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 It looks like I have to replace my camshaft sprocket hub. Has anyone ever done this? Do you have any tips on the best way to remove it and to install the new one? Can I do this with a puller or do I need a press? Thanks. Jim Yergin Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 It just bolts on with three bolts. I'm not sure if you can get to it with the engine in the car. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Yes, the sprocket comes off with 3 bolts, but the hub is pressed onto the camshaft. You could probably use a 3 arm puller, like a harmonic balancer puller, to get it off, but how are you going to press a new one back on? Is the cam still in the engine? There's no provision to pull the hub back onto the camshaft. Maybe if you were to heat it up in an oven to 300+ degrees it will go on without having to press or hammer too hard. If the cam is out of the engine then it won't be hard, but if still in the engine there's nothing substantial to press against. What's wrong with the sprocket hub that requires this task? Merle Quote

The sprocket does bolt onto the hub with three bolts but the hub itself is pressed onto the end of the camshaft with a key way. It is the hub that I need to replace. Jim Yergin Quote
wayfarer Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Sounds like you need a bearing spreader for removal and a press to install... The hub is not a 'wear' part, why is the change out needed?? . Quote
