Here's a look at the new water pump.

I've got a couple of questions before install - very basic questions for you experienced guys, but again, here's me a novice getting in there and doing it for myself!:D

  1. Do the gaskets need any type of 'goo' on them prior to install or just good to go?
  2. Should I put any type of 'goo' on the bolts when replacing them to fix the pump on (anti sieze type stuff)
  3. Can anyone comment on the 'extra' hole in the bottom of the pump - it came with a plug for this

Looking forward to doing this job tomorrow - hopefully have Dorothy humming again... tally ho!!

With that waterpump having ind., and tractor applications...that is probably where your plugged port comes into play.

Look on the bright side Rob, you'll never have to grease your water pump again!:D

Rob, from memory I put a thin wipe of gasket goo on either side of the gasket and on the bolt threads, also check the bolts as they are specific lengths I think, also as they go into the water jacket make sure they don't have any rusted threads that may allow water to seep up the thread........also put a wipe of gasket goo on the thread of that plugto ensure a good seal..........andyd

I'll put a thin wipe across them. I did see that the bolts were differing lengths - out came the masking tape and pen to label each one...thats a habit I'm getting into with the work I'm doing on the cars! Can't hurt.

Would it be worthwhile getting new bolts if they are starting to show some rust?

Rob, if you decide to chase new bolts make sure that you get UNC, NOT shitworth, which will have the same thread size but have a mongrel pommy head size.......andyd

Just thought I'd let you know that Dorothy is back on the road again after having her new water pump installed.

Job went pretty smooth with just one hiccup...

I found that the fan pulley cone actually touched the housing of the pump. Compared with the original -had about 4-5mm gap - this one 'j u s t ' touched the housing. I solved the problem by using some stainless washers on the inside of the pulley against the pump face plate.

Everything is back together and seems to be working fine with no leaks.

Thanks for everyone's input.
