faucet47custom Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Okay, I have finally gotten to spend some time on the car. I've been stripping it down to prepare for lots of metal work. I know what direction I want to go for the suspension and body. My few goals that I have questions about and would appreciate any tips, advice, or things you've successfully done. 1. 12 volt upgrade, I have to completely rewire the car. I will probabbly buy a universal harness and I want to add some creature comforts. I have read about alot of the changes as far as the gauges, and voltage reducers. Any tips for the setup, or alternator would be appreciated. I also want to add A/C so if you've done both please let me know. 2.Overdrive, I have read a lot of threads about it but can someone please let me know some of the basics. Where to source the parts, can it be used with Fluid Drive? 3. Motor Upgrades, I know I need to change the ignition system so anything about an HEI upgrade. Also what other thing have you done or changed to make the motor more reliable, I plan on enjoying the ability to drive this car and will be putting miles on it. I am trying to get any mods in line in case they will have an affect on the rebuild, or need to prepare the body or suspension for them. Quote
Russellc Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Hi, I rewired using EZ-wiring co. basic kit with spare circuts to add creature comforts down the road. (a/c, power windows, antenna, etc.) I also added a GM one wire alternator. For gauges, i went aftermarket so i cannot help you there. I do miss the original flavor of the factory set up. If you look in the speedway catalog you will see some voltage reducers to address dropping from 12v to 6 v. Russ Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 the wiring harnesses I think are carried at Summit..just down the road from you a bit...can go and see in person what they carry..would ping their website prior to the trip however..do somewhat remember seeing them on display last time there.. p24-1953 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 1.) Whats driving the 12v conversion? i chose to rewire mine piece by piece, following the guide. i bought all my supplies at summit and it cost less than 75 if i remember right. ( granted all my wire is yellow orange and green so it does not look stock?) ps. i belive that a/c can run on 6 volt, check out my other post in a few mins..... 2.) call george asche for the transmission he can build you a fluid drive with overdrive. it runs about 1800 but will include everything you need. i had him build me one for my hy-drive equiped car and it is by far the best up grade i have done. The torque multipilication and overdrive really makes these cars preform well in town and on the highway in third. i very rarely ever use any other gears or the clutch. 3,) is the ignition upgrade only because of 12 volt? faucet47custom Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 Yes, the HEI is mainly because the 12 volt, I like the reliabilty and it will help the performance a little with the few engine mods I want to do. Quote
faucet47custom Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 I also forgot to mention the big reason for 12 volt is the air bag setup. Quote
