my guess: that's akin to a torsion bar, which is essentially a spring...this might have had something to do with what that Dodge did in its previous life

yeah, sort of an overload spring-ish thing. I'd give a nickel to know it's past life, but the guy I got her from got her from someone who got her from a junkyard. The odometer shows 36,xxx miles, but I have no idea about the previous use.....:(, The only the sort of clues are some old nails, a saw blade and a bunch of round semi-domed metal slugs about the size of a quarter...

There were lots of different types of overload springs made in through the 60's. They were largely replaced with air shocks.

My dad was plagued with weak springs on his 60 dodge. He tried several tyoes from add on leaves to clamp on springs that wnet over the shocks. Those probably resulted from a guy truig to carry 3/4 to in his half ton or 1 ton i his 3/4.

Those are pretty neat in that the work against the rear axle housing and the frame.

Bet the empty ride was not pretty!!!!!!!

yeaah I bet they were pretty springy. I got the truck on 4 wheels today and noticed that one of the odd springs was broken....:(. I guess I'll take them off, chances of finding another is most likely less than zero
