mrizzodpm Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 I'd like to buy a 5 window cab four speed in excellent condition. Prefer 48, 49 or 1950 in restored condition as I don't have the time now to work on it myself. Please be assured the truck will be well-cared for. Thanks. Quote
jmooner3 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 Where are you located? There's one up north of me... http://burlington.craigslist.org/cto/1664795601.html Quote

Bob_Koch Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 It would help if you would give us your general location. I'm doubting you want something 2000 miles away. Just my guess. Quote
mrizzodpm Posted March 30, 2010 Author Report Posted March 30, 2010 I live in Calif., but willing to ship the right vehicle. I'm willing to spend up to 12K depending on the restoration quality. I want a four speed on the floor. thanks. Quote

HanksB3B Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) It's an auction so who knows how much it'll go for. As for myself, I'd have to look at it personally to see if the paint job is professional or amature. I'd want to drive it and I'd want to know what was rebuilt and how it was rebuilt. It takes a lot of time to get things "just perfect" not leaking, tapping, smoking, firing right up, all gauges working just right. There's aways something to do on them. Simple as they are they are kind of like a bridge in a sense you start painting and by the time you get to the other side you have to start over. Mostly low cost maintenance, always easy access and almost always simple to fix. To "watch' the auction you will need to register with Ebay (no cost). I've been pretty successful getting things I need. There are some stratedies I'm sure you can learn by googling something like "How to win on Ebay" or something like that. You can usually ask the seller a question, and if you live close or you think you like the truck that much, maybe a drive or a flight would be worth it. Do you have any experience or idea of what to look for in a restored vehicle? If everything the seller says is true it looks like a really good restoration has been done to this truck. grey beard Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Are you aware that these trucks with four speed transmissions are not one bit like modern four speed transmissions? The first gear is "Grandma" gear made just for pulling out of muddy fields - waaaay too low a ratio for road use. When you drive a four speed on the road, you always start out in second gear. Unless you are a farmer, there is absolutely no advantage in owning a four speed - AND they are about sixty pounds heavier. JMHO Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 I am speculating here, but I suspect that you maybe had one of these trucks in your past? A '48-'50 with corner windows and a 4 speed is pretty specific. I hope you find what you are looking for. As someone with a '50 3/4 ton with corner windows and a 4 speed (with Fluid Drive) I know you'll love it. By the way, the 4 speeds on the B1 and B2 trucks are not syncronized. You'll have to double clutch in order to shift smoothly. The B3 and B4 4 speeds are the syncromesh type and shift more like a modern trans. Merle Quote

Maybe it's because they don't exist - like the '53 domestic version of a VW that I once owned. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 To double check get underneith and look at the drain plug. If it points down at an angle it is a crash box. If the drain plug points straight back it is a syncromesh trans. Merle Quote

Merle Your right about my past Merle...It included a gray pilothouse Dodge that was owned by my grandfather. That truck was his ride and I'll always remember grandpa and the truck. Me and my brother Mike used to love riding in the back especially when Grandma was on board. I know he's not here anymore but when I look at these trucks I get a warm feeling inside. The search for the right truck has become somewhat of an obsession I'm afraid..its probably a bit pathologic but what the hey..I don't give a crap...I want my Dodge truck! Grandpa became a peddler of fruit and vegetables which he sold off of his 36 or 37 dodge dually. I have pics of both trucks. I really appreciate all of you guys helping me out with my quest to relive a precious part of my past. These are the coolest, most beautiful, as well as masculine trucks ever built. I don't care if it has compound low, double clutch or not..its all good. Quote
