p24-1953 Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 i am wanting to clean up the trunk in the car, it has a lite coat of surface rust on the floor and general grease and grime for 20 years of holding extra parts. what are the thoughts on how to clean it up. i was thinking about painting it (restolium) and then either buying a sheet product to attempt to make a mat, or just using a truck bed paint and calling it done. is there a right or wrong thing to do? what color was the floor of the trunk originaly? the inside of the lid is a gun metal color. does anyone make ruber trunk mats for our cars specificly? Plymouthy Adams Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 I believe you would have to stumble onto NOS part..my rubber mat in the 54 is still fair..no chunks missing but a crack here or there..I probably will replace it one day with a nice sewn carpet..does your car have inner fender panels in the trunk? p24-1953 Posted March 17, 2010 Author Report Posted March 17, 2010 no mine doesnt have additional panels, its just the inside of the outer body panel and some old looking sound deadner sprayed on them. is that another variation sorta like the under trunk color? Quote
windsor8 Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 If you're lucky enough to find a NOS trunk mat chances are it might be hard and brittle. The original trunk mat in my 48 looked good but it fell apart when I removed it. I found an indoor-outdoor carpet remnant at Lowes that I think made a pretty good trunk mat. It was not really like carpet but more like matting. Quote
Lou Earle Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 remove all loose scale rust etc. clean with mineral spirits then paint with rustolieum rusty metal primer- red. Leave open for 48 or more hours then paint with color of rustouieum of your choice I use grey- I mix black and white to get it . I use paint brush works fine. The go to Middle Ga tools on mlk and ask them where to get pad- I cannot remember name but you can get a 6 ft by 10 foot pad for about $100- will do all of the car . I think it is middle GA industrial supply one block up from Ga tool. Very nice mat. Lou Quote
