Folks,

I suppose winning five Olympic medals is a lot better than many countries might boast but for those of us who live in North America we've been basking in the many lime lights to have shone in the last two weeks, complete with drama, compassion, winning many medals, and putting one of our prettier butts on the cover of "Sports Illustrated". Yet there is one country that did some almost miraculous scoring that has gone largely unsung.

Finland took four Bronze medals in Cross Country and Ice Hockey (what a game!) and they took a Silver medal in a sport that was invented not too long ago in the good old US of A; Half Pipe. Pretty neat, huh? That ain't all because the entire population of Finland is fewer than five million people from whom they can select Olympic athletes.

Personally, I think they may be some of the toughest, strongest, most perseverant people in the world and I admire what they have done and will certainly surpass in the near future.

Pekka, will you and your fellow Countrymen revel in your well-earned glory!

Thanks a lot for the compliments Randy. Here the public doesn't think Winter games 2010were a success, but dissapointment, go figure. We tend to set the bar high, and people counted ski jumpers and downhill skiers to bring some home also, which they didn't deliver.

Fireball, Congrats. Finland did great. I can't say I watch much sports on TV .I don't care for the figure skating. I think if it was only women and they threw off some of if not all of the clothes , I might watch. Hockey is good but best seen Live.

I do like WRC . Mikko Hirvonen is just one of many great Finnish drivers. Eric

Eric you must be a rare breed in States, I thought seriously that nobody has even heard about WRC rally there? And I agree with you about Mikko, this nation has had the most world champions on that sport.

Not that rare; HD Theater covers it pretty well. Personally I'm rooting for Sebastion Loeb to repeat, although I'll admit I'm more interested in the Citroen Junior team right now!

I grew up on Cape Cod and for some reason we had a community of Finnish immigrants. I don't know when they came but in any event, they had their own churches and sometimes you would drive by and the sign in front would say the name of the pastor. For English speakers, the Finnish language appears very mysterious. My father used to drive by a Finnish church and he thought the name of the pastor was the Reverend Unruly Rooster.
