replacing sending unit

I recently purchased a sending unit for my '48 p-15 (6volt) from J.C. Whitney and thought it would be a simple drop in, wire up installation but they talk about shortening the arm as needed but don't tell how to determine what that length should be ........has anyone here installed one of these or have any info ? Any help will be greatly appreciated

first off..if this is not a two wire sender (post marked 1 abd 2 with base as ground)..you guage is not going to work..if it is also not 30 ohms across the sender it will not work...as for the arm..simulate the arm by measureing the depth of your tank and set the travel for to match outside of the tank unit..then install. ( now it is possible to have the single wire 49 series one unit..which still needs be the 30 ohms if my memory is correct)

Thanks for your input guys, the sending unit I got from J.C. Whitney is a single wire and although that was one my main concerns when ordering it,their customer service assured me it would work but as often happens, that may not necessarily be true. Thanks again
