36Plymouth Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Last summer, I was driving my '36 Plymouth, applied the brakes and heard a "crack" noise. The next time I applied the brakes, the brake pedal pulsated quite noticibly, and stopping distance increased. The pedal did not go to the floor. I have one suggestion of what the problem might be, but before warm weather returns to Illinois, I would like some more ideas as to what could be causing the pulsating. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. The last time I heard a "crack" noise, it was a broken leaf in a front spring, but I dont think that's what happened this time. Thanks, Pat O'Connor Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I once had abonded shoe lining cut loose..similar noise and feel...it would still make contact with the metal shoe backing but not even diplacment thus the possible pulsating Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 A cracked brake drum is not out of the question. It would cause quite a pulse, and since it was coincidental with the sound, I would check all the drums for a radial crack. Quote
36Plymouth Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Tim & Niel, Thanks so much for your advice. I also got some good tips on the P-15-D24 page, and a friend of someone on the Plymouth Owner's Club forum had also suggested checking the brake drums for crack(s) between the bolt (stud) holes. I'll check out all of the tips as soon as it hit 40 degrees in north central IL. Regards, Pat O'Connor P.S. If anyone reading this has an idea not previously posted, I'm all ears. Quote
old stovebolt Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Did you ever find out what the problem was? Quote
