Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Today I started doing some of the wiring under my hood. Looking at the wiring diagram, I can't quite see the connection between the voltage regulator and the battery. The VR has three terminals. One goes to the field terminal on the generator. Another goes to the armature terminal on the generator. The third one looks like it goes to the ammeter. There is also a wire going from the ammeter to the starter solenoid. Is that how the VR-to-battery connection gets made? Obviously I'm confused here. Quote

It flows regulator to ammeter, then to igntion switch, then to sol switch, to complete the circuit ..Fred Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Thanks Fred. I was just reading boxerinv's rewiring saga in the archives and confirmed that's the route the wiring takes. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Joe are you making your own wiring harness? Let me know if you need/want the special terminals that go on the VR Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 I did too. I'm using ring terminals I got at Auto Zone and they seem to be working out fine. I'm crimping them and soldering, both. Yes, by the way. Making my own harness. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 The original harness used terminals that go 90° to the wire. They are called flag terminals. Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Right, that's what was on mine originally. I was able to make the ring terminals stay at 90 degrees to the regulator, though. The PO of this vehicle did quite a bit of jerry-rigging. The battery cables were 14 gauge and I've found wiring hooked up in some strange places. He was an eccentric--a miser, a recluse, and a packrat--so it doesn't surprise me. Quote
