Joe Flanagan Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I will be installing the temperature sensor in my block soon. I notice that the nut that fastens the bulb down into the larger nut that goes directly into the block does not turn freely. It catches the spiral wire shield that goes around the capillary tube. As you turn this nut, it wants to climb up that spiral wire. Maybe this will be OK, maybe not. Does anyone have any pointers on doing this? Last thing I want is to break this tube. That's probably a crappy explanation. I'll reword it if it's confusing. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Might be a burr or piece of rust in the nut thats hanging up on the wire. At any rate, do not twist the tube. I would probably work the nut up the wire until I could see the inside from the back and free it up. Its got to turn freely to tighten up in the block fitting. Its there to trap the bulb against the inside of the fitting that screws into the block with out twisting the tube. Possibly, by moving the nut all the way down against the bulb, you can work the wire spring back out of the nut enough to tighten it. I guess it goes without saying, be careful there. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Thanks Niel, I'll check that out. The spiral wire acts just like a set of threads and the nut just naturally wants to climb up them. Seems to me like I need a bit of clearance between the nut and the spiral wire. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Exactly, the nut should spin freely. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Today I put a dremel wheel on my drill--a very small diamond blade wheel--and cut the spiral wire just above the nut. Now it turns freely. Should be ready to temporarily install the dash and gauges for the initial engine start up. Quote
aero3113 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I put some sealant on both pices that go into the head on my 50. Just some added security for leaks down the road. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Joe you're a brave man taking a dremel to your brand new temp gauge! Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Oh, I was nervous, I tell you. I cut about two-thirds of the way through the spiral wire guard and then put the tool away. Did the rest with very small pliers. Quote
