i recently modified my hydrive to have an overdrive. the transmission is 9" longer so when i connect the speedometer cable back up it is stretched tight and has 2 sharp curves in it to make everything reach. when it is connected it will sweep smoothly up but will not drop back down, until i loosen the end at the transmission . at the speedometer head the replacement cable is only able to secure on by a thread or two. its like the head is not deep enough. this ebay ad describes the problem look at the two photos

does everybody's speedo have this brass nut? were you ya ll recommend getting a new cable? the local shop does not think they can manufacture the cable sleeve due to the "deep nut"

by the way i looked at Roberts auto parts page and it appears that the image shown has a shallow head connection also

post the pic of your speedo screw on end maybe we can find a way around the problem

lou

also if your speedo end is unique you might send it to a speedo shop and let them put that nut on a new cable

this is not my speedo but, i have the same brass fitting on the back of my speedometer that prevents the cable from threading on tightly. is this normal?

this was the last cable i bought

I kinda wonder if the brass thing is there to take up the extra space in that long nut. Maybe its there only because the cable supplier used the deep nut. Will it come off? If it does, could you use the regular shallow nut?

I think you just need a longer speedo cable.

On a P15, it's my understanding the longer cable is required.

I haven't installed my R10 yet, so can't say for sure.

I do have a longer cable in my parts collection for when the time arrives.

i agree, but one of the problems im having is the fact that the cable will only catch one or two threads on the head. is yours the same way?

Is it possible that the little square tip that goes into the back of the

speedometer is too long?? If too long, then it would not let the

cap seat down far enough onto the threads. Just guessing here.

I don't know what the length of the tip is on mine, but the cap will

screw down tight to the end of the housing.

Oops......I just went back and saw the pictures. Mine on a 47 does not have that brass spacer.

But the above pictured cable looks like mine for a '47.

Here's a pic of one from ebay listed as 53-54 Plymouth......it appears to have that spacer item.

This is the only photo I have of my '50 speedo, but it looks like it has the same brass spacer... I was able to use my original speedo cable on my 50 Plymouth with a '55 Dodge overdrive, it fit fine.

I'm assuming there are two cable types, if there are two speedo types... Wondering if the cable you have is for an earlier model?

unfortunatly my original has been replaced. the current one was held to the speedo with duct tape for a few years. worked pretty good for 4 years.
