I don't know if it really makes any difference in cleaning, but in this kind of weather, 10-30 degrees, I seem to have less of a flooding problem. I think its because the oil in the cleaner is stiff and has a little choke effect. Or not. I do know that when I take the cleaner off and set it on the floor, it doesn't spill oil on the floor when I kick it over.

As far as cleaning ability, the foam rubber air filter on my motorbike has been the best. Foam rubber can be cleaned with a little gas, squeeze a little oil into it before putting back on vehicle. The air box and carbs are very clean after 10 years, with the same filter.

I think the value of the paper filter is in the convenience of changing it. Cleaning out the oil bath is a pain. I think the filtering ability is similar and under todays conditions where it difficult to find an unpaved road, coal dust and diesle particulates and a lot of other contaminents are gone, there is little to choose between them as far as filtering and performance is concerned.
