Robert Smith Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Well gents, had a very nice drive to Pomona to rid my self of some antiques... I visited with some of the dealers down there and had a nice little afternoon. Was a beautiful day and perfect driving weather! As I was going home, I was on the 210 freeway... As I was passing through Azusa, I heard a "POP" and then a kind of low subtle “wonking” noise... I got off the freeway, figured the car just hit a rock or something and it hit the floor or something... I wasn't far from home so, I just got the car home and figured I'd have it toed to Dale's... I talked to my buddy I bought the car from and told him what happened... he said it may be low on tranny fluid or maybe the rear-end is very low on fluid... So, I went out to the car this morning and had a look around... there it was, the rear passenger side was lower than the rest of the car... she was flat as a pancake! Well, when I get the spare on, I'll drive it over to a tire shop and have them replace the innertube... more on this later. All I can say is those safety rims really work... the tire stayed on the rim and didn't even cause the car to jolt or anything... mind you it was on the rear, I'm sure it would have been a little different had it been a front tire. Thought I'd share that, -=Rob=- '46 P-15 Quote
Robert Smith Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 Well, got the spare on and saw what caused the rear passenger tire to go out... hopped I picked up a nail or something... figured I'd just have to replace the inner tube... well, not that lucky this time. The inner wall of the tire blew out! There's a four to 5 inch rupture in the wall just a few inches below the tread line. Sucks... I'll have to buy a new tire. -=R ’46 P-15 Quote
Jim Yergin Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Robert, Sorry to hear about your hard luck. How old was the tire? How is your car running. Wasn't it only working on five cylinders or am I not remembering correctly? Jim Yergin Quote
Robert Smith Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 The tires are a little over a year old... can't recall if there's a warranty on them... they're cheap Chinese Nanco's. Soon as I have the money, they'll get replaced with Polyester Firestone's... sick of the cheap nylon Chinese Junks! Flat spots and all. lol Maybe I'll find some reasonable radials that will fit the 16" rims. Yeah, I have some low compression in the first two cylinders... she seems to be hanging in there... Darin followed me down to Long Beach on the 31st of Dec and he said I was holding good speed... around 65-70... but, I have reason to believe that his spedo is off a little since so many cars were passing us as if we were standing still. I just lost my full time job I got in October, long story but it wasn't my fault at all... stupid Depression... just want a good job to keep my woman and my car happy. -=R Quote
Jim Yergin Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Robert, So sorry to hear about the job. Times are tough. Hang in there. Jim Yergin Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 flat spots on the tires are oft time an idication of poor shocks...have you tested these of late? Quote
47heaven Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Rob...my speedometer is not off by that much, if at all. The needle does tend to move back and forth a fourth of an inch or so, but is pretty much in the correct range. You also have to remember that people on California freeways average 75-85 mph. Therefore, that's why they were passing you. With the compression as low as it is in those two cylinders, I think you push that car a little too much on the freeway, especially by the way I see the puffs of smoke come out of your muffler at times. Did you ever find out where that oil was coming from out of the back? Quote
