i recived my "new" overdrive and the install kit to convert my non overdrive car. how does the unit work? whats the 3 way switch for? the pull handle? how /where does the push button get installed? what is the carb/throtle linkage piece for?

The pull handle goes under the dash to lock in/out of OD. The carb and throttle linkage piece should replace a piece currently on your car. The button should be mounted in relation to the throttle linkage piece so that of full throttle the button will be pushed and your car will kick down out of OD. now sure what the 3 way switch is. The only other piece you should have is an OD relay.

Thats how the factory system works. They had 2 styles one with the button on the carb and one with it near the linkage. But with either one when the linkage is wide open it pushes the button. Cant see it very well but the kickdown switch on my 51 is in the middle of the head by the oil filter. The relay is just above the voltage regulator.

because thats such a comon thing, flooring it i mean, all that street racing i do

Its intended purpose is for passing on the highway/freeway.

Most of us who have retrofitted OD's into our cars have managed to do just fine without the kickdown switch; if you want to go back to direct drive just flip the switch off, lift your foot off of the gas for a second, and when you step on the gas again you will be out of overdrive.

hum that might explain the wet carpet i will check in to that.

how does the govener work on these units. does it automaticly cut in and out at a certain speed?

does that still work with out the kick down switch? do you have to rengage the overdrive if it drops out becuase the govener?

for example: with the hy-drive i can start and leave it in second and as i drive around town. with the overdrive installed will it switch in and out of overdrive as i come to a complete stop at lights? or will i have to turn it on and off? so my second gear really becomes 2 speeds?

what is the final ratio of the overdrive? .65?

The governor lets it go into OD. You still have to let off the gas above the OD speed to get into OD. Plus you have to have the lockout handle in. Typically I just drive as a standard 3spd around town and then use OD on the highway. No real reason to use it at 30mph.

The way the ratios stack up in a 3 speed w/overdrive, there is actually pretty even spacing if you go 1-2-2OD-3-3OD, as 2OD fills in the big jump from 2nd to 3rd. Second overdrive is the best gear on my car for getting up a freeway onramp and getting up to speed quickly.

As I am running smaller diameter rear tires than most, most of my around town driving is in 3rd with OD engaged; if I slow to go around a corner it automatically shifts out of OD and accelerates nicely.
