Joe Flanagan Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 My new belt is NAPA part 24489. It's got the teeth on the inside of it, but I guess they all come that way now, no? It fits well at the water pump and main pulley but it seems a bit too wide for the generator pulley. It does go down into the groove, but I'd say about a third to a half of it is sticking up beyond the pulley. The tension is good all around. Does this sound right to you guys? Quote
claybill Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 somewhere along the way plymouth switched fan belt sizes...many motors have a bit of both! i have been running a mis matched belt for 2 years...it works fine so far..not too much you can do about it.. kkeeep it tight and carry a spare!! Jim Yergin Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Joe, I may have an extra generator with a wide style pulley (it may even be the one that was on the motor you now have). Let me check. If I do and you want it you can pick it up the next time you are out here. Jim Yergin Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Thanks, Jim. By the way, I was going to return your hoist this weekend and check out the Tractor Supply store near you. Are you going to be around? Quote
Jim Yergin Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 I will be here most of the weekend except for a few hours on Saturday afternoon. Jim Yergin Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 I had the same problem with buying a new belt when I rebuilt my engine. Everyone wanted to sell me one with the teeth that didn't really fit right. I have a friend who owns an industrial belting company. They primarily make conveyor belts. But.........they also distribute belts for industrial motors too. So.....I got one from him that fits perfectly, and it has no teeth in it. Might check around with the industrial supply houses for a good belt that fits right. Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Thats a real good tip Norm, thank you. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 gates make belts that have no ridges. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 12, 2009 Author Report Posted December 12, 2009 Michael, do you have a link? Quote
msawdey44 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 The wider belts are still used on heavy trucks. I have been getting mine from ryderfleetproducts.com. In addition to the 49" size, which is, I think, the standard size for the old Mopars, they have other lengths, in the event that you've changed to some other size of pulley, installed an alternator, etc. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Michael, do you have a link? no but when i get home ill ge you the gates number, so you can buy the same belt. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 13, 2009 Author Report Posted December 13, 2009 Thanks, Michael. As it turns out, Jim Yergin was good enough to give me the pulley off a spare generator he had. It's much wider than mine and it looks like it will accomodate the new belt with no problem. I went out to Jim's place yesterday and dropped off his hoist. Then I went to a Tractor Supply store up the road from him and got myself a new 6 volt battery. The brand name is Exide. It was the only one they had. I was surprised to find out that they didn't carry 90W oil. I haven't been able to find it anywhere. The differential calls for 90W but I'm wondering if 85 would be OK. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 The differential calls for 90W but I'm wondering if 85 would be OK. Joe; 85 is what I am using. It should work well for you. Most any auto parts store has it. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 13, 2009 Author Report Posted December 13, 2009 Thanks a lot Don. I figured 85 would be OK. And as you say, I've seen it every place I've looked. I was amazed at the stuff Tractor Supply had. The hardware collection was a little disappointing but otherwise, it's like a candy store. Quote

They also have good prices on a watering trough. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 No, but I did check all that stuff out. They had all kinds of pulleys. Belts, too. A wide variety of rubber matting that you could cut to size and could possibly work in our cars, either for floor mats or for other purposes. Spare trailer axles. Lots of tools. And a teenage girl with a T-shirt that had the Confederate flag on it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 a teenage girl with a T-shirt that had the Confederate flag on it. You are in Virginia. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 This particular place is not very far from the Bull Run battlefield and in the general region of a lot of other Civil War events. I think there's also something called the Civil War Heritage Corridor nearby. Quote
