Robert Smith Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Ok, I have taken the wire out of the steering column and have checked it over and over and over for any cracks... taped them... put it all back to gether and the horn sounds when I hook the battery up again! What I'm thinking is that I may have the horn hooked up to the relay wrong. Can't find any photos right now of the wires from the horns to the relay. Any pics could help out a lot! -=R PS: Car's running, new light switch seems to be much better now. :-) Quote
randroid Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Robert, A year or two ago there was a discussion here about the alignment of the figity bits under the horn ring, and the gist of it was that if they were not aligned exactly in a particular way, the horn would continuously sound. I have that problem with my '48 P-15 but I need to replace the battery to be sure it's fixed, and I don't want to do that until after the car is painted. Perhaps whomever wrote that post will respond with the correct procedure. -Randy Quote
LuckyDevil Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 I just put electrical tape between the horn ring piece and the spring under the horn cap. I thing there was originally rubber on one of those pieces. Then when you press the horn ring it grounds on other parts of the assembly and works. Its kinda hard to describe but if you see the parts you will know what i am talking about. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 The wiring diagram shows how the horn RELAY is supposed to be hooked up. Special Deluxe....... Deluxe.......... Quote
Andydodge Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Robert, from the Special Delux pic that Bob posted above........the Contact earths the circuit thru the plate then the spring onto the steering wheel. The wire up thru the column is an earth wire and the horn ring when pushed "earths" the circuit(as an aside find where this wire from the column attaches to the horn relay, disconnect it and temporarily attach another wire to the relay and touch this wire to a good earth.....the horn should blow when the temp wire is earthed) .......this wire comes to/from the horn relay........the horns themselves should have a "power" wire from the relay and they also have an "earth" wire OR earth thru their actual mount..............the relay power gets earthed when you press the horn ring................does this make sense?........ John Mulders Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Robert, I experienced the same sort of issue. Problem was the spring that made the contact (the part where the last part overflows the underlaying part. I turned the spring counterclokwise a bit and the re-assembled it and the problem was gone. steveplym Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Here is a pic I have. Might help rule out your connections. Quote
martybose Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 My horns used to sound off intermittently of their own accord. I fiddled for ages with the horn ring and couldn't fix it. Then on a whim I installed a new horn relay, and everything has been fine since. Marty Quote
Robert Smith Posted November 2, 2009 Author Report Posted November 2, 2009 Hey there guys, thanks for the info, this afternoon after work I'm goin' to try and find some time to put this advice to practice here! I'll give a report later. -=R Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 The horns do wire up in a sort of weird path.....I followed the wiring diagram found in the service manual. A bad relay is a possibility too. Quote
