Don Coatney
It will not run backwards. I used a 12 volt starter from a mid 50's Plymouth and it works great.
Plymouthy Adams
there are no pernament magnetic field so the polarity has no effect on rotation will spin correctly no matter the polarity..
dirty dan
if I replace my 6volt starter w\ a 12 volt starter what are my chances of it turning backwards?: Where did you find one? My starter is dragging badly.
Plymouthy Adams
a dragging starter is usually just the rear bushing enlongated to one side due to the stress related to normal operation. The bushing is generally about 90 cents to 2.30 cents and ought to be had at any auto electric facility. It is easily removed by driving a very thin screwdriver between the outer side of the bushing and the hole it is pressed into..being oilite it is brittle and will break out without problems...be sure to soak the new oil-lite bush in oil prior to installtion. In the absence of an actual bushing insertion guide or small arbor press..a person can tap one in with a small hammer using a 6 inch 3/8 drive entension.
