Joe Flanagan Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Does anyone have a good method for repairing this material? I'm ready to install my defroster motor with its ductwork and there are a few holes and tears, etc. Since it's not visible I'm not really fussy about how a repair would look. Quote
james curl Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Is this not the round convoluted duct that can be bought new at any parts house? Mine are round expandable paper duct. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Joe, if it's the cardboard stuff, I've had good luck with glass cloth and resin. I did my glove box liner with it and it came out nice and strong. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 Yep, that's it. I was thinking of some kind of a repair like that because I didn't think duct tape or anything like that will work. Thanks a lot. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 The cloth I used was not the thick coarse weave, it was thinner and finer. The liner was sort of collapsed so I had to prop it into shape with some wood sticks inside until the resin on the outside set up. After it was done, a little sanding on the edges and a coat of satin black paint and it was literally stronger than new. Quote
David Maxwell Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 ...aluminum expandable duct from the appliance section at Home Depot. Fit perfectly and was easy to work with. Nobody sees that stuff. Sorry, one item I don't seem to have a picture of. Does anyone have a good method for repairing this material? Norm's Coupe Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 As mentioned, Duct Tape the miracle cure will work. So would the dryer duct hose. But........if you want black, you could pick up some of the plastic drain hose. It comes in various diameters at the hardware or big box stores. Quote
Johnny S Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Pete "Blueskies" might jump in here Joe but I think he used fiberglass to reform and repair his and then repainted it. I'm sure he has photos on his website. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 Thanks for the responses. It will be a good indoor project. Haven't been able to do anything outdoors because of a rain storm that's been parked over this part of the east coast for the past three days. And counting. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 On a 49 the defrost isnt a hose like the older cars. Its a big cardboard duct that goes the entire width of the dash. Try the fiberglass Joe should work for you Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 You are correct and thanks for the advice. Quote
