TJM70's_48 Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 I met a fellow at a car show who had some '48 parts he wants to sell me. Since I'm new to antique cars in general, what is a fair price (for both of us) for a transmission and gas tank? Both out of a running car that caught on fire and was parted out. Both items are good on my car...although I have a slow transmission leak and the idea of having a spare gas tank is appealing....I don't "really" need either thing so I don't want to overspend if I buy them. ~tom Quote
greg g Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 New repoped tanks are int he 275 to 350 neighborhood withthe 350 being for stainless steel. transmissions any where from 35 to 75 based on condition. Take the side cover off and check the gears for wear. 50 cents on the dollar is good for used parts. so 150 to 175 or less for the tank would be a reasonalble offer. Ask him if the ferrul is still in the conection to the gas line. Quote
1940plymouth Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 This summer I paid 45 dollars for a good used tranny for my Plymouth, it cost 75 dollars for shipping from the west coast. Quote
claybill Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 i would pay only 50 bucks for a used tank, take all the little parts that hold it together too. and 50 for a tranny, maybe 75. i would offer 100 bucks for them both. if it was my old parts i was trying to unload i would like to get 100 bucks!!! then you could sweeten it a little. bill i have been to so many motorcycle swap meets, the joggling about for a good price is the most fun...dont have many car meets tho. Most gas tanks rust out from the inside out. So.....you really can't see inside that old 60 year old tank, to see just how much rust is in there. If the tank had some sort of coating inside, I wouldn't buy it at all, even if it was just cleaned and sealed. So.....I wouldn't give more than "maybe" $10 for it. Anything more than that, I'd rather buy a new one. But.........in your case you say I don't "really" need either. Whenever I'm buying used parts to have spares, I will not spend a lot of money for them. After all, it's not an emergency, so I have the upper hand as far as price goes. I can take it or leave it, so I'd probably only give $25 for the tranny and $10 bucks for the tank. If he didn't like those prices, I'd simply walk away without either. The worse that can happen is my tranny goes bad. But........it can be fixed. Same with the tank. I can always buy a new gas tank. So.........it has to be worth my while to buy a part I don't need today. Quote
TJM70's_48 Posted October 7, 2009 Author Report Posted October 7, 2009 Norm...that's sort of where my thinking is going, too. I need seat covers and interior work...but only so much money to go around...I just didn't want to make him such a low offer as to insult him...but I also don't want to have a parts warehouse. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 I really don't consider I was insulting the guy. I would just tell him, while his parts may be worth what he's asking, it just isn't to me, because I don't need it that bad. That way, he knows where you are coming from with the low ball price. If he doesn't mind holding onto the stuff, then he'll just keep it until he gets his price. But........if he just wants to get rid of the stuff in a hurry, he can then take you up on your offer. I use to collect any parts I could find when they were cheap. In fact, over the years, I've had one standard and one fluid drive transmission, one 230 running engine, one rearend and a driveshaft given to me free from people who just wanted to get rid of stuff. Kept the stuff around for a few years and decided it was taking up too much space, so gave it all away to various people. Bought a rolling chassis right after buying my coupe just in case I needed those parts. But........all I have left off that is the body mounts, front end parts, steering column and steering wheel left. Sold all the wheels and the rearend, then cut up the frame and tossed it. The frame rails were rusting out on the bottom of it from the inside out. Gave the front brake drums away that were on it. Outside of those parts, the only spare parts I have now are small electrical parts, a few trim parts and an extra right rear fender that I got cheap years ago, and that driveshaft. Almost forgot, I also have a good heater (one side of the dual heaters) and a set of horns that are extra. All of these parts are small though and don't take up much space. If I need some other part someday, I'll buy it then, or fix the part that's already on the car. Keep in mind. If that guy ends up selling his extra parts to some vendor. That vendor is not going to pay $50 for a tranny that he can only sell for $50. Quote
