randroid Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Gents, I've been saying for several years that this would be the year my car would finally be painted. Well, it ain't going to happen this year either, but it is getting closer all the time, thanks in part to some PMs I've received from forum members, notably Tim and Norm. Due to their recommendations I will continue to roll Rustoleum primer, but then I'm going to look into spraying the finish coats. I've never had a problem with spraying paint, either physical or moral, but I got the idea of rolling the car because if I could afford $500\gallon for regular automotive paint I am insulted by the price and would boycott it for ethical reasons. I ran across a thread about using Rustoleum on cars and liked what I saw @ $30\gallon. It has several other advantages over regular automotive paint but I won't get into that now because I can't afford a decent compressor, hoses, guns and whatever else I'd need of which I'm yet unaware. If I could afford to build a paint booth I'd have no place to put it, so my plan has always been to roll it on, then I got this 'hellofan' idea! We're renters with a great relationship with our landlords, and I noticed when I walked to their house a few days ago they'd built a new storage shed to replace the one-car garage that became infested with squirrels over the last few years. They also have a good compressor so all I'd need to do would be to buy a decent gun and learn to use it, after I spent a week moving stuff from one pile to the next, hosing the garage down well and hanging plastic all around. What really turns my crank is the possibility of infusing a very subtle metallic reflection to it; I'm not into heavy metallic on my personal car but more of a hint of a reflection. I think it would give the car an air of class that couldn't be rolled on. I'm aware of websites such as 'Autobody101' but I haven't seen much of anything on applying metalics and even less on how to learn how to do it. Got any suggestions on where to go to learn? -Randy Quote
rolliejoe Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 i think michael.warshaw has experience with spraying metallics, you should pm him. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Long ago I visited the Rustoleum web site..they do have metallic paints..your local dealer may order what you ned if you were to get the product number for them. Quote
Jacqualine47 Posted September 5, 2009 Report Posted September 5, 2009 Also, have you looked into Interlux Brightside? It is a marine paint that is designed to be rollered OR sprayed - single stage polyurethane made to paint yachts. It can be used with or without the Brightside clearcoat, and I read in a massive thread somewhere that somebody successfully added the metallic flaking to a rollered paintjob by stirring metallic flakes into the brightside clearcoat and doing a layer of that followed by several layers of just the clearcoat - then wetsanding to get it smooth (the extra layers of clear were to protect the flakes from the wetsanding. Brightside is a nice paint, is glossier than Rusto paint too, as it is a polyurethane ss. With tipping/rolling, you can get amazing results, as I have seen for my self. The metallic inclusion is very interesting too. God also created Correctional Officers, to implement/supervise the "Time Outs" to his misfit children, that the Police removed from society.Sometimes I wonder why I got into this business.....LOL Quote
randroid Posted September 5, 2009 Author Report Posted September 5, 2009 Gents, I just googled Interlux Brightside and found a very interesting nine-page post about using it on a car. It's time for work now but I'll check it out more completely tonight. Thanks for the heads up. -Randy Quote

randroid Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 Rockwood, I haven't forgotten the ladies by any means, and I am well aware this is an open forum welcoming everyone equally without regard to a whole bunch of personal stuff, and I find that a valuable asset to our community. Just last week I considered beginning a post by addressing it to 'Lady Ruth and the Gentlemen' but there are women here other than Lady Ruth although their posts are infrequent at best and I don't know them well. Lady Ruth, what's your call on this? Few people here are too worried about being PC but you're an accepted and respected member of out community with a determined goal who isn't nearly as fearing of getting your hands dirty as some might feel would befit your gender. Kick it in, because my parents and grandparents were Oregonians and I lived there for nine years while in college and still carry some of the mindset because it blends well with Colorado. -Randy Quote
randroid Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 Jacqualine47, Welcome to the forum. From my last post you may guess that I hadn't read your post before I answered ... Oh, never mind. I checked-out Brightside today and really liked what I saw. There was a very in-depth paper on its application to cars, part of which was the use of metallic bits in the first clear coat with two more regular clear coats over it to protect the metallic stuff from floating to the surface and being washed away. I certainly appreciate your input and the input of other forum members; this entire project is having dimensions opened to it of which I was unaware just a few days ago. I'm getting very excited about this! Thanks again! -Randy Quote
Jacqualine47 Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 +grins+ Keep us updated on how it goes! I haven't tried the brightside stuff yet - just read about it, so I'd LOVE to hear how everything goes for you. One day in the distant future I plan to roller a brightside dark pink/purple two-tone paint job (I know old mopars didn't come in that color scheme, but I think it will be great - and people might stop accusing me of borrowing my significant other's vehicle... that happened all the time with my camaro LOL), so if you go the brightside route and add the metal flakes I'd really like to see how it turns out. As for the PCness - don't worry, I get lumped in with 'the gents' all the time so it doesn't bother me. Going into criminal justice will do that LOL Quote
