bts_dodge49 Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 Hello all, couple of questions hopefully someone can help me with: First, I have the 230 CI which runs good except for a small smoking issue I can't seem to narrow down. When I sit and idle for a while I get a good puff of blue smoke when taking off. Compression is between 105 and 120. I'm not adding oil so I can't figure out where it's coming from. Could one of the piston rings be passing some oil? Why only idling? Second, I have the Holley Weber from Langdon. Does anybody know from experience what jets I should be using in this? I have to run with half choke all the time....not rich enough. Thanks again everyone...awesome website. Todd Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 What do your spark plugs look like? Are they black and sooty? My guess is that the smoke you see is from the carburetor with the choke on. Are you running a single carburetor or duals? If a single do a forum search for a thread started by James Douglas and his experiance in trying to use a single Holly Weber carbureator. It did not work for him. If you are running dual Langdon carburetors then contact Tom Langdon for his advice. He told me that nobody on the internet knows anything about his carburetors. So I suggest you go directly to the horses mouth for advice. Quote
greg g Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 blue smoke is usually oil related, and smoke upon acceleration after idling, suggests worn valve guides. Blue smoke that goes away shortly after start up or accelerating after turning a corner aslo result from worn valve guides and or seals. high vacuum at idle pulls oil up the valve stems ad through the guides and as you extend the idle the smoke shows up. Which holley weber do you have, Langdon sells ones that were originally desiged for a 1.6 to 2.6 liter application on 4 and 6 cylinder cars. So putting one on a 3.7 to 3.9 liter engine seems a bit inadequate airflow regardless of the jet sizes. But I am not an engineer so I could be wrong. Tom is an engineer so he has to be right........ bts_dodge49 Posted August 28, 2009 Author Report Posted August 28, 2009 Thanks Don and Greg. Plugs look tan to white, and I initailly thought the same...running rich. This smoke is definitely blue... Sounds like the valve guides. Is this a big deal to change? Any quick fix? I'll look for the thread by James... It sounds like I should think about another carb??? You are right, the Holley Weber I have is for the small 4 cyl. Any carb suggestions? Right now I just want to stick with the single carb. Thanks, Todd Quote
greg g Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 You might wat to look at the Holly 2bbl that was used on early mustangs.falcon 260/289. I believe it would bolt to the adapter you have, and they feature externally adjustable main jets. Also there is an aftermarket carb sold for folks who have the carbed Jeep cherokee and wrangler 6. I think they were equivelent to the carter BBS or BBR I forget which of those is the 2bbl. (that would be another option, they were used on a lot of MOPAR v8's. from the early 50' on. Take a look on the car board at the recent posting from James Douglas, he was worrying a Weber set up, and got it fixed with an adapter that connects the throttle butterflies so they work together.
