The correct tools are important....but so are mistakes, how else to learn? Ditch the mechanic for anything smaller than a engine rebuild and work your way up to an engine tear down or transmission swap, you will gain confidence and knowledge along the way. You can have it explained to you, shown to you, or done for you...but you really won't learn unless you get your hands dirty.
