dabeaver1 Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 I have a 1952 B3B pilothouse and can't seem to get the rear drums off.Obviously there frozen good or I'm overlooking something.I removed everthing except the shaft key (in which I can't get out at this point). The brakes are freed.I used penetrating oil, heat, puller and still no luck.Shouldn't the drums come off at this point? What's going on? Anyone Know?Open for suggestions... Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Can you post a photo of the puller you are using? I use a pneumatic wrench with mine and the hammering action usually does the trick quickly. Quote
coW52Dodge Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Mine came off with a drum puller but had to really whack the hammer head hard to the point where I thought something was seriously wrong. I broke the wooden handle of my mini sledge in the process. It will come off, though. I've read another suggestion here that suggested to loosen that nut but keep the cotter pin in and just roll it around the block to pop it loose. While it sounds like good advice, I have not tried that approach, though. Quote

Reg Evans Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Dean, I can see why you are having some trouble. Buy or rent this type and you should have the drums off in no time. Quote

Reg,I can remove the sliding hammer attachment and install that center bolt(bolt is in the pic),but it doesn't have the wings like yours.Have to use a wrench or socket on it.Thanks,Dean.Also want to thank coW52Dodge for his comment and suggestion... You're welcome - I'm not an expert, though. I just did this job recently and had a similar experience to yours. An impact gun on that other threaded piece will get it off but will give your compressor quite a work out. Mine was ON so opted for the hammerhead/sledge hammer approach - even that took a lot of pounding. On the plus side, it was good to get some of the day's frustration out of my system. MBF Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 I'm not sure if this is a recommended practice or not, but when I originally had the rear drums off my '36 Plymouth I put neverseize on the axle shaft before reassembly. I had to remove one last year to replace a whl cyl, and the puller removed it a lot more easily than the first time. Mike Quote
grey beard Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 If your rig is drivable, sometimes it works to loosen the drum nuts a few turns and make a few sharp turns. The tapered fit between the drum and axle can get pretty tight over many years of sitting around. Like Mr. Fowler suggests, once they're off, don't reinstall 'em before you butter those drum axle bores with some neverseize compound of some sort. You'll be glad you did, next trip back inside. Reg Evans Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Did ya put an impact wrench on it yet ? A million blows from an inpact wrench beats a few blows from a BFH. Oh....BFH = Big ars hammer. ars is spelled with a silent F. Quote

I got one side off (rear),will try the other side today.Definitely needs work inside.Do you or anyone have any resources for parts? Will todays auto/truck stores carry the basics or essentials?Always appreciated,Dean Quote
JJs 1948 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 Dean, I know this is a long shot but if you are in Michigan I can loan you the correct Mopar brake drum puller like Reg has. These pullers take the drum off easily. Let me know, Jeff Quote
