claybill Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 took my 41 for a drive..put it in garage ...i came back in 2 weeks and there is a huge puddle of oil under the car!!!!! checked all the plugs..tranny ok..still has most oil in crankcase...where else..... i cleaned everything up....took a short drive. parked it again and after a few hours small piddly puddle right under the oil drain plug. drain plug IS TIGHT....drip drip...mght it be coming from somewhere else...? rear seal or pan plug gasket, maybe. any guesses? places to check? i think almost a pint or 2 leaked onto the floor. i cleaned everything with a rag...and will check again in a few days... oil filter..ok oil pan gasket..ok as i can see tranny plug...all tight. NO oil spray under the car..basically none. so it seems to be dripping AFTER A RUN. any theories or explanations..? am i missing something? (thats typical)!! bill Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Bill , One thing to check if you live where salt is used on the roads ; see if rust has gone through your oil pan , perhaps just a little pin hole . Quote
greg g Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Check the valve cover gaskets. Although is should puddle from there unless the lifter gallery returns are plugged. Mine weep some, rear main is likely culprit. Get under and wipe it all down with some cleaner spray and reags then check after it sits, and then after a drive. Put a big piece of cardboard under also to help pinpoint the area where its dripping. Alway hear to tell after the engine has been runing as the fan and road breeze blow it all aroun and it collects on drips from lots of places. tranny to bell housing area is also a suspect. Quote
Normspeed Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Bill, I had a mechanical fuel pump diapraghm going bad, and it was pushing oil out of a small vent hole in the pump housing. It ran back down the block above the pan gasket, and dripped towards the back on the right side. Was always worst after a drive. Quote
claybill Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 good ideas...i'll check each one. thanks, bill Quote
