aero3113 Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 I have a slight leak coming from one of the bolts that hold on the cover plate on the oil pump. Do you think if I put some sealant on the bolt this will help? Or should I change the gasket? If I need to change the gasket, where can I find one? Quote
48mirage Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 I had a problem with a leaking cover. The gasket that goes in the cover plate is actually a square cross section 0-ring. Couldn't find any at the local machine shops but did find them listed in the McMaster-Carr website. I didn't want to buy 10. What I did to stop the leak is cleaned the o-ring and coated it in hylomar then put some blue RTV on the mounting plate outside the diamater of the o-ring. Been working so far. Quote
aero3113 Posted June 29, 2009 Author Report Posted June 29, 2009 When I pull off the cover is some oil going to pour out? Quote
48mirage Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Here is a link to the square cross section o-rings. They came in a couple different sized based on the year. '46-48 used 2 3/8" ID by 3/8" thick. 46-54 used 2 17/32" ID x .085" thick. They also have a link on the web page where you can order exactly what you want. http://www.mcmaster.com/#o-rings/=2j2c47 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Any new news on this topic? When I was adjusting my valves this weekend I noticed oil seeping out between the end plate and the oil pump body at the top of the pump. All of the bolts are tight so I suspect that the seal ring isn't sealing good enough. As I recall I rebuilt this pump with a kit from Bernbaum when I rebuilt the engine. Now's the time to address this since I have good access to it. Is there a known fix out there? Has anyone tried the McMaster Carr o-ring? Or should I just break down and buy a new pump from Napa for $114? Merle Quote
aero3113 Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 I ended up replacing my pump with a new one I found on ebay for $45. Make sure your leak is not coming from the oil pan gasket and running down the pump.I now have a slight leak on the pan gasket that is doing this.Once the weather warms up I am going to change the pan gasket again. Merle Coggins Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 The oil leak was definately coming from between the end plate and the pump body. I could see it seeping out at the top side of the pump. Wednesday evening I removed the cover, took out the seal ring and replaced the cover. Then yesterday I went back to our o-ring rack and found several that were close. They are round o-rings, not quad rings, but I'll try it. Last evening I found the one that fit the best and installed it. Volvo P/N 11707526 with a list price of $9.58, so it's probably not the cheapest fix. I squirted some white lithium engine assembly lube into the pump and reinstalled the cover. Started it up, oil pressure came up to just over 40 psi and no more oil leak, at least for now. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it holds up. Merle Quote
