1949d100 Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 How much can our 1/2 frames handle before they need to be boxed? Quote
48Dodger Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I would check it for stress cracks, repairs, and alignment. If you're gonna go with a larger motor...box it. If you're going with a stock set-up, make sure rust isn't hiding in the mouting points of the suspension, etc....I believe there was a thread with pics concerning stress repairs between the cab and box. 48D Quote
Allen I. Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I think this is the thread... http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=11952&highlight=frame+hole Quote
smallblockjunkie Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 I am installing an ls1 in my truck. my whole frame is boxed with one solid plate on each side. the cross members were removed and then welded back to the new plate, 3/16 inch thick plate. Quote
woodscavenger Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 I agree with 48D. I have seen several threads on the weakness of the frames. The bed bolts went through the frames and cause a point where the frame can crack. Mine has had fish plates added at 2 locations previously. Quote
grey beard Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Not only are there issues where the factory drilled through the frame flanges - a definite industry no-no - but the frame material on half tons is only 1/8-inch steel. Better box 'n beef, if you're gonna' be running high torque through your ride. JMHO Good Luck:) Quote
MBF Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 If you're in an area where snow/salt or mud is an issue you may want to make sure that you have some type of drain installed to allow moisture and kicked up sediment to drain or so that you can flush out the frame. Toyota just did a massive truck recall on a large age spead of their trucks due to the boxed frame rotting to the point of failure. I also believe they changed the design of the frame to a more open type based on the problems they were having. Mike Quote
1949d100 Posted May 28, 2009 Author Report Posted May 28, 2009 I am not sure what motor will be going into it, but I am thinking that it can't hurt to box it. Quote
