Went to leave from work this morning and the 51 wouldn't start. The starter would spin, but wouldn't engage into the flywheel. It would just free spin. Is the starter most likely shot. Engine is original and it's still 6 volt. Had to have the crew help me push start it...

Is your battery fully charged? Sounds like there's not enough oomph for the solenoid to pull in the lever to kick your starting gear into the flywheel. You can manually push the lever into the solenoid (which will put the starting gear in contact with flywheel) and then either have some one turn the key (careful to not have any extremities near moving parts!) and see if the starting motor can crank the engine. If you handy with a screwdriver you can trip the starting motor yourself while pulling it in.

Sorry for the poor description, brain is currently processing a million things at the moment...Hopefully someone else can better describe the process!

these starters are of the bendix design that spinning of the motor is the engagement..odds are you just need to change the bendix..once in the motor though I would at this time recommend a new rear bush and possiblily new brushes..inspect both...if bush appears good..fill the end cap with oil and allow the bush to soak in lubrication..pour and daub out excess oil on assembly

number of causes can lead to bendix failure..first is flat out used up due to age..second is engaging the starter during a start before the motor has had a chance to stop spinning..timing issues resulting in backfires (cause spring wrap damage)

the bendix is serviceable as a replacement unit...
