Young Ed Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Anyone know whats inside them? The stock size window for my basement is about 1/4in too wide. Custom windows are double the price. If there is just wood inside the vinyl couldn't I shave them down with a table saw etc? The part thats no longer vinyl covered could then be painted etc and its going to be butted up against the cement block anyway. Quote
cole18cars Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 It,s hollow inside. You could go the next smaller size, and furr the opening, or if there are wood jambs you could plane the jambs. Quote
builtfercomfort Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Can you enlarge the openings a little? I see spare windows all the time on Craigslist too, if you want to experiment with one you might get a spare for cheap and cut it up? Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 Ed what kind of material is your window opening made from, wood, brick or? if it is wood you should be able to rip a small piece off to make the window fit, i would not cut the window they are kinda thin. i had to open up mine 3/4" for the new windows, just took the skill saw and ripped it down then finished the cut with a sawsall. can't even tell they were not put in when it was built! Young Ed Posted April 23, 2009 Author Report Posted April 23, 2009 These windows are set right into the cement block of the foundation. There's no enlarging the opening that I can see. The stock 32x18 window is 49.99 and a custom 31.25x19 window would be 111. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 Ed, You might think about glass block windows for the basement. Then have a vent window in a few for ventilation. Not only do they look nice, no one can see in if you get the diamond type glass block, not even a shadow, but let lots of light in the basement at the same time. Plus, they are about 3" thick. Now for the best part. I had them installed in my house by a contractor for only $112 per window. You'll pay close to that just for the window if you do it yourself with vinyl windows. Also, the windows are made to custom fit your window opening. Contractor had all 8 of my old basement windows out (including the wood frames) and the glass block windows installed in just 2 1/2 to 3 hours. No mess or old windows to throw away either, they took those and disposed of them. The one with the vent is in our laundry room, the other one without the vent is in a storage room. They can custom make any size glass block window. Also don't need any curtains in the windows. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 23, 2009 Author Report Posted April 23, 2009 I suppose I could do that but I like to do stuff myself. If I can find a way to make the stock size fit they are only 50 each. You're right though if I have to order the custom ones I'm probably better off to go with the blocks. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 Ed, Originally, we were going with regular basement windows too. But........after getting the quote from the contractor the end of February we couldn't pass it up. Gave the guy the contract on the spot. We had them in within a week after getting the quote. Sure cut down on the draft we were getting in the basement too, from those old single pane windows. Made the floor upstairs a lot warmer too. Even the vent windows are privacy glass. We did want a window that no one could see into. Just like I've retired from working on cars. I've also retired from doing things like this. Use to do everything myself. Life's too short though. Let someone else do the work while I sit back and relax. Quote
