wilmot andy Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Heres an update of my 49 wayfarer. I have the Dakota frame, new engine mounts, had to offset the engine almost 2" and made a recessed firewall. Cut the coulumn off, welded a plug and DD steering shaft, bronze bearing and a Borgeson joint from a Chevy Astro van. Had to hack away at the firewall I made, didn't measure it with the heads and valve covers on, had to cut more out. Measure twice, cut once. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) wow..you sure set that engine way back on the mounts...That is the position I set the V6 in the 51 Suburban with my Dakota clip..but the V8 in the 52 Club Coupe and Dakota clip..just a bit more forward...no firewall cut either car.. good to see you making progress...the ole shift left is necessary as the Dakota is offset tunnel..our old cars are not... What rear gear you using...don't forget there are various conversion joints available.. Edited May 24, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
wilmot andy Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 Heres one of the firewall. Not done yet. I mounted the engine with the radiator to get clearance, but I will be running an electric fan instead of the blade. I have a scattershield with the A833 4 speed, and a 8 3/4 rear. No driveshaft yet, will have to get one made, don't think I could get a junkyard one of those. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/download.php?Number=5092811 This is an older pic, before offsetting the engine, got the coulumn over alittle more, and before I cut it. dezeldoc Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 WoW I only had to move the firewall back 3" when I put the 440 in my 48 P-15, that seems like a lot for a small block. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 other than the width at the top for the big block due to head design..height and length is practically the same as the small block.. Quote
wilmot andy Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 dezeldoc, its a big block 383, and its recessed almost 4". gave it alittle more so I could get at the top bolts of the scattershield. The nose of the water pump is long on these, don't know if they have a shorter one. Quote
moparjack44 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 On my 48 DeSoto, I made no alterations to the firewall when I installed the 392 Hemi, and I am running a 6 blade junk yard metal fan. Jackie Quote
