Norm's Coupe Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I've been thinking about building a model train layout for years. Finally decided to get started on that about the 1st of the year. To get idea's I've been doing a little surfing on the net to get idea's on space required, types of trains, buildings and scenery building. In the process I came across a forum set up almost exactly like this one. In fact it looks like the program you're using right now. On that forum main page it has a listing for "Virtual Tours". I've spent a few hours on that tour looking at photos of various peoples layouts. It's great! Maybe you could add a section to this site for peoples cars and their progress pictures. If you want to take a look at the set up the site address is http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/index.php Just a suggestion, but I'll bet the other guys would like something like this here too. Don't know if you have the room for it though. Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I like the idea, any feedback from the group? At this time space/bandwidth is not an issue and I can always purchase more. Quote
Allan Faust Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Im interested... I've got tons of stuff to date, from when I've got it home to the frame off.... if people are interested in asking questions, etc according to the pics I post.... I'm always willing to answer...... On a similar subject, GTK, what about the possibility of the chatroom? Allan Quote
PatS.... Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Sounds like a great idea to me. Hotrodders.com has a journal section where the guys document their progress. Might be some good incentive for some to get out into the subzero garage and get something accomplished Quote
Johnny S Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I like the idea as well. Here's my thoughts. There are many Mopar fans, including several who frequent this forum, who have already developed great websites that document their progress, discuss problems and solutions and just generally ad value for all of the rest of us working on our projects. I think it would be great to approach this emerging idea from two fronts. One would be to provide a place where those of us without the necessary web skills or access to resources to put up our own web site could post photos and whatever (video/soundclips/???) regarding our projects.....PLUS......make sure that those already existing websites are linked in such a way that the total product of this effort is really a "one stop" shopping site for these well documented renovation/restoration projects. That's my thought. But, with that said, I suspect I will like the idea however it comes out based on ideas already discussed and the willingness of GTK to take a serious look at the idea. Quote

Don't know if you have the room for it though. Norm; Toy trains are great. But if you want the real thing come to California. My dad told me stories of riding the interurban railway. It was the best "high speed" railway for commuting between small towns in Indiana in the first half of the 1900's. Here in San Francisco these same restored and upgraded rail cars are in daily use. They are a real treat to ride. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 13, 2007 Author Report Posted January 13, 2007 Don, I know about the trains out there. There is also a train going from that area up to Seattle (I think). Supposed to be a real nice train ride with nice stops in between. Would love to take that one someday. Requires too much time though to get to California, than take the train ride too. Maybe someday when I have more time. I have rode the trolley's in San Francisco though. A few of us spent the day riding around, walking and riding the trolley's to see the sights in San Francisco back in 1962. We were all on our way to Korea then. Flew to report to Oakland Army base. Once there they released us for a day before we had to get on a troop ship and sail under the Golden Gate. We did take a cab over the Golden Gate that day too. I see it's colder out there than it was here though the last couple of days. There is another nice train ride out of Suite St. Marie, Canada into the Agawa Canyon. Wife and I took that one back about 1995. Great scenery, especially since it was in September when we did it. Lots of color. So we ride the rails when ever we can. I'd really like to take the train from here to the coast. That would be great too, but again it requires too much time. Have fun out there. If you go to that train museum, take lots of pictures. If that's the museum I'm thinking about they also have a short train ride you can take. Quote
Ed Griffin Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 In 79 while the wife and I were stationed in 29 Palms,CA. We decided we were going to stay and live in Sacremento. With that we wanted to head back to Memphis using up the last of my leave to say our hello's and goodby's so we caught the Amtrak in Barstow, think it was Barstow, and headed east. It was something like 2 1/2 days to get there via Gallup, NM., the Rockies, Chicago then south to Memphis. Thats one round trip I really enjoyed. Never had been on a train before and would recommend anyone to do it at least once. You get the pleasure of seeing scenery you wont see from a car because the tracks go places that there are no roads. I had seen the Rockies as a kid living in Denver but when we went through them on the train I snuck to the bottom deck of the lobby car and opened the top half of the door and got the best view you can imagine. That was only one of many scene's enjoyed on the trip and can only say I'll never forget what a pleasure it was making it, both ways. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 Never traveled a train in the US...however I did a bit of rail travel in Germany..the run up the Alps was fantastic and it was winter skiing season...twas a fun ride indeed..we really need more rail service in this country...keeping to a schedule would be the hard part here..you can almost set your clocks by the trains over there.. Dennis Hemingway Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 Ed, This is the train station in Barstow, is this where you left from? In 79 it would of havd a chain link fence around it. Dennis Quote
Ed Griffin Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 Dennis, it does look familier but I couldnt say for sure. Like I said that was in 79 and we only saw it leaving and coming back just those two times. Seems this was the closest place to catch Amtrak from the stumps. I didnt even know where the Memphis station was until we reached it. I'll have to get the wife to take a look and see if she remembers it. Ed Quote
