Joe Flanagan Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I'm getting ready to order new brake hoses for my front wheels. I converted the front brakes to disc. The stock hoses should work, shouldn't they? Has anyone done this? The hard lines are going in just like they were originally, so length of the rubber hoses should be the same. Just want to make sure before I order. Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Who's kit did you use ? I used starbird and the stock ones hit the spindles and king pin boss, had to use different style hoses. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 I used AAJ Brakes. Don't know if they still make the kits anymore. I'd check my old ones to see how an exact replacement would fit but they're gone, I believe. At least I haven't been able to find them. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Joe, I used the AAJ set-up too. If I recall correctly, it calls for a GM banjo style brake hose instead of the original. It may be listed on their web site. I am away from home until Sunday but I will check my records when I get home and see if I still have that info. Jim Yergin Quote

Jim Yergin That is the same I used on mine, the banjo worked great and no more interference. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I think most of the kits use the Banjo lines. That's what came with my disc brake kit from ECI. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 Gotta confess my ignorance. What's a banjo line? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 Instead of the hose going straight into the caliper fitting, it is inserted on the side of the hose fitting. Run a search for GM hoses or banjo brake hose and you'll see the difference. It's all in the way it's attached to the caliper. The other end is like any other brake hose. Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 My kit gave part #'s and they were the stock screw in type. I just happened to have a set of banjo's sitting on the shelf! Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 Instead of being a "fixed" fitting it swivels and should alleviate any clearance problems. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 So you guys who used the AAJ kit, were you able to keep the same configuration with your hard lines? With my original drums, the brake hose attached toward the front of the wheel. Now that I'm using calipers from a 71El Camino, the brake hose attaches toward the back of the wheel. If I keep the same configuration of my hard lines, it looks like it will be OK but I might have to run the hose between the shock and the kingpin. Hard to say yet if that's OK. I have to rig up a hose and turn the wheels and see what happens. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 I just got off the phone with the guy who operates AAJ. He tells me I need the hoses from a 1976 Monte Carlo. He says the original configuration of the hard lines should be fine with these hoses. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 Here is what I used on my PLYDO kit. 85 Buick Riveria. Raybestos #H51003-2 I did remove the metal support bracket and drank the scotch. Clearly shows the banjo fitting. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 Thanks Don. Now I remember what they look like. Actually, it looks like there is some Scotch in that bottle under your car. I'm sure it's just brake fluid, though. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 Went out today and got some front brake hoses from a 1976 Monte Carlo and it looks like they'll work fine with my front disc brakes. All the hard lines stay the same with the original hardware, clamps, junctions, etc. All the lines themselves will be replaced. They do not sell the hoses with banjo bolts so I have to find those. Now I have 76 Monte Carlo hoses, 71 El Camino calipers, and 79 Volare rotors. Frankenbrakes. Cold as heck here in Virginia with the wind howling. Can't wait for spring. Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 I just googled banjo fitting suppliers, 35,000 hits...you might want to narrow your search a little closer to home. Try a aviation listing or just order from Earl's, or anyone else that makes braided lines. Maybe Aeroquip..... Quote
