Where to buy axle rebuild kits?!

i had a closer look on my front axle and found most of the rubberparts in tatters or bonedry (as i expected after 69 years ). since i want to do it once, but right, i was thinking of buying complete rebuild kits for front and rear, but i didnt really find any, only for post-war models (i guess '40 ist pre war in the US  ).

there will be a lot of stuff, bushings, bearings, pins, tie rod ends, rubbers...

i have to pay large shipping costs to germany (and customs) anyway, so i'd like to buy everything from one hand, to minimize shipping. $$$...

can you recommend any dealers for these parts (i'd like good quality, too, not NOS rubber that disintegrates after 2500km...)?!

thanks!

oh, it was. or even is... it's called "ein käfig voller helden"

(a cage full of heroes). they translate everything here.

i checked out kanter's and it looks fine, lifetime warranty and everything...

but i didn't find any brake parts. maybe i just call.

some people told me not to order at bernbaum's, but i don't know why exactly,

so i'll just give it a chance and have a look at it.

thanks for your answers so far! it' really interesting to dig into the construction of the car, just today my new shop manual arrived. great book, because i had only a combined '36-'42 version before, this is much more detailed!

Fred,

Bernbaum has a reputation for bad rubber and a bad attitude. Some people have had good experiences with them but the complaints are many. My personal advice is to avoid them. Even if you can tolerate their arrogance and hostility, you could wind up with bad rubber. Not worth the risk. Have you tried Vintage Power Wagons? They have a web site. You could try Roberts, also.

ok, thats what i thought.

and you're right about the rubber:

i bought some for my '69 opel (it had to go for the 40) at a dealer

in holland, really expensive, and it only lasted about a year.

i looked under the car and most of them were damaged or even lost,

especially the moving parts on the ball joints and transmission shift lever.

thats really annoying, so i don't want that again.

I have to make a positive testimonial for Andy Bernbaum, since so many here are blaming him for poor customer service.

I have ordered maybe four times from Bernbaum and discussed three four times with him on a long distance call. All the parts I've received have been correct, fair quality and right priced - no complaints from uncle-Pekka.

I agree, that he does not do small talk, nor much thank-yous or pleases, but for a finn that makes me feel at home :D

On the other hand: I tried to buy windshield rubber seal from Roberts: They had those listed incorrectly at their web site. I made the selection by their description and even called to be sure. However, the piece I got did not fit. After receiving the wrong product I called them second time - THEN they admitted the selection at the web site was incomplete and recommended another model only listed in their printed catalog. They refused to replace the product or take part of the postage of a new one. In short the mistake was due to supplier, but no responsibility was taken by Roberts. That was my 1st & last deal with Roberts. Fortunately Bernbaum & Kanters carry all the items, thus 3rd supplier will not be needed for consumables...

Actually, that's not the first time I have heard about bad rubber from Roberts. I don't think I will be buying mine from them either. But I definitely won't be going to Burn-Bomb. I know some guys have had good experiences with him. I have had bad ones and there are many others besides me. I'm just playing the percentages. I haven't had any negative dealings with Roberts. Haven't dealt at all with Kanter because I find their web site frustrating. Never heard any complaints about them, though. There's another place in Massachusetts, Antique Auto Parts Cellar, which I have had good luck with.

you can never be sure, maybe a hundred people had excellent deals and you are the first to get real trouble, that's for sure.

but why take the risk and order at a place with a questionable reputation, when you have to pay huge shipping prices PLUS customs and everything...

kanter, by the way, has a reputation of being to expensive (at least over here) and when i talked to some guy from them on the phone, i could as well have spoken to the commander of a local recruiting station.

*NO SIR; I DON'T SELL THESE!!!*:D

so much for small talk...:) i haven't placed my order yet, but i guess i'll just give it a try. heck, i want to drive the thing...
