Young Ed Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 You need to oil the speedo itself now. Quote
dirty dan Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Hi Everyone,Well, I tried turning the inner cable end for end and and it WORKED GREAT!!!! The speedo is now working and the cable is staying secured on both ends. I drove it all weekend with a big smile on my face. I do have one more question for all you experts, the speedo needle seems to be a bit bouncy when I go past 30MPH. Like I said before, I've lubrocated the speedo and cable but the needle still bounces within about a 10mph reading. Any thoughts on this? Thanks to EVERYONE for making me feel welcomed here and helping me with my problem :) First of all...And this is important...Did the needle bounce when the inner cable was in the inverse position? If not you need to place it back as it was and find a way to secure the other end. Those cables are designed to spin in one direction and can unravel if resistance is met. Secondly, what did you lubricate the speedometer head with? You should use a very light oil like for watch or sewing machine oil. Quote
hauntedhouse5 Posted February 16, 2009 Author Report Posted February 16, 2009 You need to oil the speedo itself now. Hi, As I stated in my previous post, I've already oiled both the speedo and cable. Thanks Quote
Young Ed Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Sorry misread that. What did you oil it with? Might take a bit to work its way in and you might need a second application. Quote

I unscrewed the cable on the speedo end and drove the car and was able to see the inner cable spin freely inside the housing while driving. I can also spin the back of the speedo gear with my hand and it spins very smooth and freely as well. Quote
moparjack44 Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Well, I installed the 'new' cable yesterday. Nothing:mad: . Now the speedo/odo, does not work at all. I was/am not comfortable with the way it fit into the speedo gear in the tranny. Just feels like when I insert into the gear, the inner cable slides back into the housing:confused: . Of course I can't really tell that it is, just fells to me like it does. Back to the garage:( as soon as I finish this cup of coffee.Jackie Well, I took out the new, put back the old, it's back working same as before. I did check, and clean the old one, and it turns freely. The new cable did not fit into the tranny gear far enough. QUESTION, how to oil the speedo? Jackie Quote

hauntedhouse5 Posted February 16, 2009 Author Report Posted February 16, 2009 try this thread from the "search"http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=5766&highlight=speedo+lube Thanks for the info. Do you think the gear oil I used will not work? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Here's an interior view of what you see when removing the housing. As I'm no expert, I would not dare to disassemble the thing any farther. Quote
moparjack44 Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 try this thread from the "search"http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=5766&highlight=speedo+lube Very helpful, but, what about WD40? Would be easier using the little red attachment nozzle that comes with the WD40. Jackie Quote

Would be easier using the little red attachment nozzle that comes with the WD40.Jackie The lighter oil the better. I think I would first try to delute and clean out the gear oil with mineral spirits or something of that nature. Afterwards I would buy either aerosol (read graphite) lock lube or 3 in 1 oil. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 [quote name=hauntedhouse5;...<snip> I might try trimming my cable just a little bit on the speedo side to see if that helps. As it is now' date=' It only screws on about a half a turn before it stops. Cutting the inner cable will allow me to screw it all the way on....<snip> [/quote] You might be correct on this , but , when the cable was reversed did you have this same problem ? All of the connectors are not equal , some will only grab by about one thread . Quote

All of the connectors are not equal , some will only grab by about one thread . I didn't have this problem when the cable was reversed. I know for sure it will screw on all the way once the inner cable is trimmed back just a bit. I'll give it a try tonight and will report back Thanks! Quote
Normspeed Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I'd lop off the end of the cable with a small hatchet, then if it's too short, use some JB Weld to reattach it. JK, it's my shade tree showing again:D Quote
