55 Fargo Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Hi all, a few weeks back I went to a company in my local, they cater to industry, tools, equipment supplies etc. I went ot buy some of there Rustoleum Industrial paint, I bought a quart of Gloss Black to try it out, the product coast me close to $20.00 with tax. I was looking at the label today, it is nothing more than regular hardware store Rustoleum paint #7779, in Canada Rustoleum markets Tremclad, 1 quart is about $12.00. So I got slickered, I was wondering how much is a quart of black Rustoleum cost in the USA. I phoned the supplier Acklands Granger, they thought it was an Industrial line of Rustoleum they were surprised, when I told them it was nothing more than hardware store paint that is sold in USA stores like Home Depot............Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Fred the last rustoleum I bought was about the same as your $12.00. I found out over the weekend I can buy do-it-best antirust enamel in any color I want for $13 a quart or 26 a gallon. Quote

Normspeed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Fred, back when the roller painting article first came out, I think some folks considered the Tremclad to be a better formula than regular Rustoleum. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Here you go Fred I believe this is the stuff. Its not do-it-best brand like I thought. Would have to experiment with the hardner to see how it reacts etc http://doitbest.com/Gloss+enamel-Valspar-model-44-21929-doitbest-sku-776608.dib Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 9, 2009 Author Report Posted February 9, 2009 Norm to be honest, I am not sure it's that much different of an animal, maybe the resins are different, but the solvent content is almost identical, high in mineral spirits. The other day I took almond colored Tremclad, and mixed a batch, with 4 ounces, of high gloss almond termclad, 2 tables spoons of high gloss black tremclad, which gave my a light grey, I then added a 1/2 ounce of DOI wetlook acrylic enamel hardener, and 2 ounces of medium speed enamel reducer, poured this cocktail into my hvlp gun, and shot 3 coats on a test panel. It dried to an absolutely silky smooth, supershiny surface, I have dust nibs in the paint, but I know what I have with this mix. Ite is very shiny, dried hard because of the hardner, and has the wetlook we want. With buffing/polishing it will only get better. I am sure if a car is not kept outside in the Arizona sun, and with hardner added, the gloss retention could last quite a while............Fred Quote

Did you guys get rain in Minneapolis, it's raining here, about 35 degrees, and the School buses aren't running, highway travel is not recommended, my sidewalks are like a skaitng rink.........Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I didn't even notice that. This could be the ticket for a cheapie paint job for me. My buddy said he could use the computer to make a formula for my charolette ivory. No rain yet. I think it stayed North of the cities. Quote
