makkelsay Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 well i have a good deal on an 8" ford from a 60's comet will it work out? i know most go to 9" but for 50 bucks with brakes im down for an 8" if itll work and what should i look for when i go to look at it...im not use to ford rears Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Measure from the wheel mounting face on the drum of your car and do the same on the ford. make sure it has the drums with it as some of the ones are hard to come by. also measure across the spring pearches as you might have to move them. it will hold up to the 318 with no problems. remember also an 8" has a drop out center section like a 9". BeBop138 Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 The 8" are usually narrow enough for most applications. The 9" from the mid 70`s Bronco`s work well also. I have the Bronco in my 52 Windsor and it is 1 1/2" inches narrower each side than stock. The 8" gears usually don`t fair as well for rust and pits as the 9" units do. I think the steel is better on these. My experiance is that the half that is not sitting in the grease is always bad. The 9" seems to be more forgiving. I would go for the 9", better unit and gear choices and they should be found in the lenght you need, and the price should be about the same.....Good Luck Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 You can get 9" for 50.00 ?? I'll take 5 with 3:70 gears. Quote
makkelsay Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Well I went and picked the axle up Its shorter by an inch on both sides but the spring perches are almost exact The only problem withthis axle I know I'm gonna have is that its a 4 lug...but I've got some 4 lug steelies that should fit it Is there any chance the axle would turn the opposite way of what I need or is my friend crazy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 do yourself a favor and check the tread width..this is the true measure of the axles fit...as the more modern car has on the average a tad wider drum design and the axle a tad further out from the backing plate..when the wheels are mounted you could be very very close to right and if you are within a 1/2 or so narrow..just pcik up a set of 1/4 spacers and run them as that amount of spacer will not be felt or be so wide as to interfere with saftey on the lug bolts... makkelsay Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 ill be running wider tires and wheels in the rear Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 usually running wider wheels I find that a wider axle over stock with positive offset late model wheels of 7 inch are more in line to a perfect setup without additional cost or trouble... Quote
BeBop138 Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 You can get 9" for 50.00 ?? I'll take 5 with 3:70 gears. If both were in good shape you still would pay a little more for the 9". The problem I have had with the 8" is getting ones with 3:25 or deeper, the 9" seem to be more plentiful in the deeper gear sets. If you wait you can usually pick up what you want for the good price. Like I mentioned, the 8" gears are usually bad. Go 9" and the gears seem ok---expect to pay a little more for this. If you can get 8" for $50 bucks it shows there are bargins in 9" out there if you have a little patience Quote
makkelsay Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 I might be adding this rear axle to a for sale pile....I have a lead on a 98 camaro rear with disc brakes haha Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 you need to see Charter....lol Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Around here you can't touch a 9" for less that 200.00. I have not had any problems yet with 8" gears. Quote
46mopar. Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 If your worried about the four lug thing. That can be changed In most cases the four lug drums are 9 inch and 90's ranger drums will fit then just have the axles re-drilled for a 5x 4/12 bolt pattern. The drums are cheap and the re-drill shouldn't be to bad either. I learned this from playing with Mustang IIs. These rears will handle some abuse I've ran my Mustang with slicks and haven't broke it yet. This is always a great source for Ford rear info http://www.maliburacing.com/ford_9_inch/ford_nine_inch.htm Quote

John Burke Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 I am running an 8" rear in the hot rod and have no trouble with it. There are 5 bolt axles that will drop right in ( I did it ) WE have a vendor who usually has a large assortment of gear ratios for that rear...he shows up at most of the swap meets with a trailer load of 8 & 9 inch rear ends. I used a 60's Cuda rear end in the 49er....just the right width, had to weld new spring perches on it, had 4 bold axles so I bought a pair of 4 to 5 adaptors on ebay and have'nt had a problem....jb Quote
