mjrobinson62 Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 I put 60 miles on last weekend and when I parked I noticed a small pool of oil around one of the head studs. It is the only place on the top side that is leaking and there seems to be no performance issuse as a result. Does anybody no if this individual stud can be sealed? Or do I need to pull the entire head and start from scratch with a new head gasket? Or do I leave it alone until it gets worse? Sorry if this is posting a basic question but I am new to Flat Heads and just learning everything as I go. Quote
RobertKB Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Should not be oil around a headbolt. Maybe dirty anti-freeze. Some of the bolts do go into the water jacket and can leak. You would only need to take out the one bolt, seal it, and replace. I used anti-sieze compound on mine that leaked and it stopped it completely. If it is actually oil and not anti-freeze I had the same problem and an easy solution. I knew there could not be oil on a headbolt but it was right on it. I remembered I had checked the oil that day and the bolt was close to the dipstick (the real one, not me) and I must have had a drop fall on the bolt. Wiped it off and no reoccurence so that is a possibility for you. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 If the head bolt with the oil around it is near the oil filler breather cap, it could be from that too. If that's the case, just turn the opening for the vent cap around to stop it from getting onto the top of the head. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 Could it be coming from the tube that feeds the oil pressure gauge? Quote
aero3113 Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 maybe splashed out from the air cleaner ? Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 Robinson, clean it off and take it for a spin. as said turn your beather in another direction. I had a couple of those head bolts come loose on me however it leaked a little where the head met the block. I retorqued (With a torque wrench) everything from the center out and it never leaked again. Hey where do you drive it? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 That is odd......oil on top of the head. Sure you didn't drip a little bit when adding some oil??? Or, try what the others have said.....clean it off, change a couple things, then go for another drive. Quote
