I have parted out too many PH's. I have lost track of what year my frame is. I was going to put a 318 in my truck, but then decided to put a 225 in it. The problem, I sold the steering box for it. I bought one from a forum member, but it doesn't fit, I think is was out of a 48. Since my cab, a 53 came out of California w/no vin tag on it, I checked the frame number and all I can come up with is a 1966 or 1963. Apparently, by reading some of the threads even though they don't address is exactly, not all steering boxes for PH's were created equal. True? Any help appreciated.

I think the difference is in the box mounting ears where it bolts to the frame, and the shaft support bracket under the dash. I have a good tight box assembly from a 53 that I was going to put in my '49 cabbed truck but found the same thing as you just did. I have another one that I disassembled and am hoping the guts can be used to tighten up the one in the '49 but I haven't gotten that far yet. I think for about 250 you can have an old box rebuilt if you had a usable core. I want to try to do this myself-been through a similar drill with a radiator for an antique john deere li. Had a slight leak-reputable shop was told to just seal off the leaking tube-got a call 2 days later the radiator was all apart and they couldn't fix it-had to go find a core! Not taking the same chance with the only steering box I have that fits my truck. Mike

After sanding and scratching on the frame, I finally determined that my frame is a 1950. I bought a steering box from Dale Urich and I think it is a 48. I am waiting for an answer to my email. If so, then apparently the difference is at 1950 on or just before that.

I'm making a guess here from my own experience. I think the 48-50s are one design, and the 51-53's are another. I'm basing this on the changes in the dash, cowl, wiper location. I could be wrong-and it wouldn't be the first time (just ask my better half!) Having said that, my '49 one ton is registered as a '52 because that is the reg that it came with, but the parts from the later design are only the hood and front grill pieces that were swapped before I got it. If that is true Mike, and I am definitely not saying it isn't, then IF the box I have is a 48 and my frame is a 50 it should fit, but as you said the ears don't match up with holes in the frame. I am still waiting on an answer from Dale. He is a busy guy. Thanks

Sorry I didn't get to this early. My bad. the two examples pictured here are a 1948 frame and a 1950 frame.

The bolt pattern for a 1950 is more of a true triangle as compared to a 1948.

Close up of the 1948, note the rivets and the nuts on the outside

This is the 50, no rivets, bolt heads on the outside.

This is the inside view of the 50' steering box frame bracket. The 50' bracket BOXES the frame. The 48' bracket lays inside without boxing the frame.

Another view of the inside of the 50' steering box bracket. You can see the longer blots that reach in and thread into the steering box.

1950 steering box. Note how close the mounting flanges are to the column.

This is the 48' steering box. Its wider and reaches to the outside of the frame. Note that the mounting flages are not near the column.

Again, sorry I was late with this.

Thanks for the great pics Dodger. That is the way my frame looks, boxed where the steering box mounts. It does take longer bolts to mount it. The steering box I have is from a 49 and it has a bracket bolted to it so it stands out farther. You folks with 51-53 frames, is your frame boxed like this and is the steering box like the one pictured. I need to find another box and want to make sure which ones fit. Thanks to all for your great info.
