woodscavenger Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 I am soo ready to drive this thing I think I am going to burst but I need some help. I finally reassembled the engine and it actually fired up and purrs nicely!Great. The truck is up on 4 jack stands and in neutral. I installed a T5 with an 89 GMC safari disc. Did not replace the pressure plate. The pedal is adjusted for maximum throw with the set screws. With the truck running and the pedal depressed I cannot get the thing in gear....nothing but grinding. I did slip is into 2nd once and the wheels turned but putting in the pedal did not stop them. When I installed the disc I seem to remember one the center spline ring stuck out one side more than the other. I think this is the side I installed toward the flywheel if that matters. I was thinking about options........ughhhhhh......help. Quote

PatS.... Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 I would take it off the jack stands and try it. Quote
MBF Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 Was the GM disk thicker than the original that came out of it? You may not be getting enough throw on the fingers to completely disengage it. Just my 2 cents. Mike Quote
woodscavenger Posted November 30, 2008 Author Report Posted November 30, 2008 How thick is an OEM disc for these old trucks? Quote
Young Ed Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 Here you go don you can see how the truck clutch adjusts here. The pedal is connected directly on the shaft that runs into the bellhousing and pushes on the throwout bearing. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 I thought I had that measurement but I do not. However in my install there was ample adjustment to insure the clutch would release with the replacement disc. Quote

woodscavenger Posted December 1, 2008 Author Report Posted December 1, 2008 What's this, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? I think you guys got lost. Hoping to get some shop time in the next day or two. I really don't want to have to rip it all apart but I doubt I will be able to avoid it. Quote
grey beard Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 Mr. Woody, When you put your clutch disk in, the springs near the splined hub MUST face the flywheel. Getting it bassackwards will cost you another trip out and back in with that shiny new T5. Sorry . . . . . . If'n you did get that right, you should be able to slip a few thousandths of feeler gauge between the disk and pressure plate with the pedal fully depressed by a housemate helper. If you cannot do this, you might as well get those now-familiar wrenches in hand and find a thinner disk. No way wil lit release without some clearance to do so. Let us know what you find .. . . . .
