Frank Elder Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Read a post by Rockwood, Should fenders be body worked on or off the body, bolted down is very stable, I get that, but off body, are there warpage consequenses' Will it twist or will it matter? Thin tin? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 I think it's easier on the car. That way they don't move around on you when using the hammer and dolly. Quote
dezeldoc Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Yes they will twist if they are not supported right when you work them. If you work them off the car and do any bondo work without fitting them to the car, it may crack the work if their is a twist or something when you bolt them back on. I have worked lots of them off the car and never had a problem, but then I have been doing body work for the past 35 yrs. Just take your time and keep trial fitting them and you should not have any problems. Quote

I removed mine, cleaned prepped welded cracks, a few tiny holes, then painted the undersides, re-installed them. I have since done filler work on them, I need to apply a lillte more filler, then hit with primer surfacer, then block. They are pretty straight now. I am not removing them for paint, I have painted the inner body and fenders black, and they shall remain this color..............Fred Quote
rustbucket Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 I usually get the major dents and kinks out off the car, then mount it, and work it out the rest if the way. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 27, 2008 Author Report Posted October 27, 2008 Thank you gents, figured to work on left rear fender since I have pulled gas tank, filler tube. Going to pull fender and secure it to work bench for added stability. Could I screw it to 3/4" plywood, wood that work? After addressing inner fender and lip first. Quote
dezeldoc Posted October 27, 2008 Report Posted October 27, 2008 It should work as long as it does not pull something down that is not supposed to be down. shim it up where ever it needs and you should be good to go. Quote
