Young Ed
Chip I believe all you are missing is the giant star type lock washer that goes on that nut. That and a really beefy wrench to make sure it stays put this time!
Guest chip.deson
Thanks for your reply. What is making me nervous (not knowing what everytining was supposed to look like when intact!) is that the front surface (facing the radiator) looks almost machine-finished -- no paint, just bright and almost polished. That is what is making me wonder if there is a cover or something involved. Also, there are three smaller bolts (1/2 inch head) that surround where the big nut/bolt insert. In between each bolt is a hole -- like for another three bolts. How many are there supposed to be? Three or six? Also, what should torque be on the "big guy"? Young Ed
My manual shows 108ft lbs min. So crank it tight. And yes there should be 6 bolts.
Don Coatney
There are six bolts that hold the harmonic balancer to the front hub. They are not drilled symmetrically so the balancer only goes on one way where all six holes line up. I suspect your balancer is not mounted where all six holes line up. I also suspect that the special nut/bolt that holds the hub to the end of the crankshaft was not properly installed and tightened the last time it was apart as I have never heard of one coming off before. You may want to remove everything (hub included) to insure the key way is in place. This will also make it easier to line up all six holes. I used a very large crescent wrench to tighten my hub bolt. 48mirage
As an added item. Since this is a bolt that isn't removed regularly for maintenance you might try a little "red" locktite. Just a little added security and It will not prevent you from taking it apart again.

I have jug of #262 that is service "NON" removable meaning heat (lots of it) is required to remove it. I have only used this in a couple of applications and none are car related. The red #271 or the blue #242 would work better in this application.
