Plymouthy Adams
in 1954 the 230 when installed in the Plymouth got a diamond stamped before the P25 engine number denoting the larger block..sometimes easier to remember than what sequence number they started with
B-Watson
Standard catalog of american cars says 230.2 cu. in. eng in the P25 with the exception that early production could have the 217.8. Eng # P25 1001 thru P25-243000 until Feb 25 1954. Then P25-243001 to 454271 You may need to check the stroke at the plug over the #6 cyl. The 1954 Plymouth, when introduced, used the 217.6-cid engine. The 230.2-cid engine was adopted when Powerflite was added to the options list on February 15, 1954. Thus any engine with number less than P25-243001 is a 217.6-cid engine and higher is the 230.2-cid engine. The two engines were not used at the same time, so there is no confusion if your know when the change was made. P25*5716 is thus a 217.6-cid engine - a very early 1954 model, by the way.
